HOW IT ALL STARTED:
Taytem was taken to Urgent care on March 15th 2019 for arm and stomach pain. She underwent x-rays which showed what the doctors thought were simply gas bubbles. However, that changed very quickly-- after a few weeks of laxatives, enemas, and high fiber drinks that didn’t work, Taytem was sent for an ultrasound. Her stomach was so hard and extended that she looked pregnant, within a matter of hours Gunner and Emily (Taytem's parents) were rushing her to the ER at Cardon's Children's Hospital in Mesa.
On April 18th Taytem was admitted into the hospital, the day before her 4th birthday. The doctors had a suspicion of what the diagnosis on Taytem's stomach pain would be but tests had to be run, which meant a biopsy on Monday April 20th. After a few days, Taytem’s family finally got the news… On Wednesday April 22nd she was diagnosed with a Wilms Tumor. Taytem's family breathed a sigh of relief as Wilms tumor was the best case scenario.
This cancer IS treatable and survival rate is great. BUT, the cancer did spread to her lungs & liver.. which is treatable as well.
She had her ‘port’ surgically placed on Wednesday April 22nd and received her first dose of chemo. There will be side effects like losing her hair, and a whole list of other things. The treatment of chemo will start shrinking the tumors and she will be re-evaluated in six weeks. If the cancer is still in her liver and/or lungs, they may need to start radiation.
Since the start of Chemo Taytem has had to undergo 2 blood transfusions that have resulted in overnight stays in the hospital. It’ll be a tough ride, but Taytem is a tough girl. She’s got this
