WE ARE SKY: Learning to Stand the Storm- emotional literacy
Donation protected
What if every child developed the tools to identify, understand and express their own unique emotional spectrum?
What if learning to stand the storm didn’t mean toughening up but accepting, listening and empathising? Would we connect more deeply with ourselves and the world around us?
WE ARE SKY: Learning to Stand the Storm is a new workshop designed to nurture emotional literacy in children and young people through creativity and self-expression.
Blending art, poetry and soundscapes with the natural world, the project is designed to be more than a lesson- it’s an opportunity to reshape how we support mental well-being in education and the community.
We simply cannot just rely on our current system to develop emotional communication and support our children in becoming the next generation of problem solvers through kindness, empathy and understanding.
We have to be more radical.
We are currently seeking funding to bring WE ARE SKY to life. Your support will help us:
- Develop high-quality creative resources for schools and museums
- Facilitate workshops blending art, nature, emotional exploration and expression
- Produce immersive soundscapes and poetry prompts with local artists
- Ensure accessibility by subsidising costs for underfunded schools
- Gather input from teachers, parents and young people in Staffordshire
- Pilot the project in a series of local schools this year
If WE ARE SKY resonates with you, please consider:
- Making a donation
- Sharing this campaign with your network
- Reaching out if you’re a school, parent or artist who’d like to collaborate
I’m Felicity Hawkins, founder of Fledgling Education and former Assistant Headteacher with a passion for the power of education and its role in changing the world. Since 2021, I’ve shifted from traditional academic tutoring into the world of creative educational projects collaborating with schools, museums and communities to design meaningful, accessible experiences for children and families.
From filmmaking for Pride House Birmingham to family/school-based art workshops, every project I design and lead is about celebrating identity, creative thinking, self expression and developing a sense of belonging in the natural world.
I will be embarking on this fundraising event!
The Challenge: Conquering some of Stoke-on-Trent's Highest Peaks
Over the course of a single weekend- Saturday 31st May/Sunday 1st June, I will climb six peaks in Stoke-on-Trent. Walking a total of 24 miles over the 2 days, each peak will represent a step in the journey toward emotional resilience and self-expression that I aim to instil in young people through the project. Over the course of the weekend, I hope to document the journey for my supporters and utilise the opportunity to reflect on my own emotional spectrum and connect with the great outdoors.
Day 1:
1. Mow Cop Circular Walk
o Distance: 4.5 miles (7.2 km)
o Elevation: 227 meters
2. The Cloud Walk (Bosley Cloud)
o Distance: 4.5 miles (7.2 km)
o Elevation: 340 meters
3. Thor’s Cave and Manifold Valley
o Distance: 5 miles (8 km)
o Elevation: 209 meters

I'm so excited about this project and the potential impact it has for our community and beyond. I can't wait to get started!
Let’s teach our young minds not just how to weather the storm but how to become still within it.
