Hello! My name is Bri. I am a Certified Veterinary Technician and permitted wildlife rehabilitator. My husband, Ben, is an electrician. Logan, our only son at the time, was killed by an impaired driver on our wedding anniversary in 2019. He loved animals, especially our state’s amazing wildlife. After his death we decided to open a wildlife rehabilitation facility in his honor.
We renovated part of our basement into a clinic for our patients. However, when this strain of HPAI (bird flu) arrived in the US we were unable to take susceptible species into our clinic anymore. Groups of animals included in this are raptors, waterfowl, shorebirds, sea birds, game birds, corvids, canids, and felids. This was devastating. We were no longer able to provide care for these animals and the only option was to leave them in nature and hope they could overcome their illness or injury. We had to figure something out. So, we cleared out space in an old building on our property and created a quarantine room. However, the roof leaks, it isn’t heated and it’s on low ground so it floods. While it’s cool to add to my resume that I have examined and given fluids to a feisty owl on ice, it is not ideal for us or our patients.
In addition to needing quarantine space, we also need another room for wildlife that isn’t in our home. Our admit numbers have been increasing significantly every year and the locations of callers has as well. In 2023 we admitted 159 patients. In 2024 we admitted 260 patients. This year looks to be on track to exceed last year’s numbers as well. I have gotten to the point where I cannot do this alone anymore. I need help. So, if we are able to raise enough funds to put up a general rehab room we can start having volunteers! There has been a lot of interest with this and I’d like to start training people!
We are planning on tearing down our existing quarantine building, filling the basement and adding more fill so it is elevated, pouring a slab, building a new building and running electric, heating/cooling and plumbing to it. The building will consist of 2 rooms (1 general rehab and 1 quarantine), and a storage portion (donations will NOT be used for this room!). We want to extend the slab so we can build 2 or 3 pre release enclosures as well.
This is probably going to be the biggest fundraiser we ever do. We do not receive any state or federal funding. The time we spend on animals (usually 12-16 hour days 7 days a week during May and June) is 100% voluntary and anything that isn’t donated is paid for out of our own pockets. We are in *desperate* need of a new building. We need your help so we can accommodate the growing number of wild animals that need our help. Please consider donating or sharing our fundraiser! Thank you for everything you all have done for us to get us to this point. We are immensely appreciative of you all!
*We are not a 501c3 so donations do not get a tax write off.
*Amount may change as new estimates come in.
