Hi friends and neighbors,
Many of you know my sweet girl Mae - the goofy, happy tail English Labrador who’s been my sidekick, protector, and emotional support for the last 11 years. Mae is so much more than a pet. She’s a trained service dog who has stood by me through surgeries, PTSD, and every major life event. She knows when to be serious and when to be silly. She notoriously brings joy to everyone she meets.
But right now, Mae needs your help.
Last week, Mae became suddenly and seriously ill. She was rushed to the vet, who found severe abnormalities in her blood work and suspected liver issues/inflammation/ infection - they weren't certain what the exact issue could be, but I was told to euthanize her immediately - without a clear diagnosis, explanation, or attempt to treat. I refused.
Despite that grim prognosis, Mae has been showing every sign that she wants to keep fighting. She wags her tail, gives kisses, and lights up when she sees me. She still has control of her body, she's eating independently again, and she’s even engaging with people on her walks and/or from her cozy wagon.
A week ago she couldn’t lift her head. Now she’s trying to walk, sniff, explore - a spark is still there.
But things took a turn this weekend: Mae had a seizure. I’m desperate to get her the medical support she needs to survive this and stabilize. I know a 11 year old Labrador is "old", but up until one fateful night 2 weeks ago she was supremely healthy and the vet recently said she could "easily make it to 15" - now he wants to rush to euthanize her!
So, I’m urgently searching for a new local vet - someone willing to explore diagnostics and not just give up - or, if necessary, I may need to take her back to Florida, where her longtime vet balances both Western and holistic medicine with compassion and brilliance. Her Florida vet is already reviewing her records!
Right now, I’m doing everything I can. I’ve started Mae on a holistic care protocol based on research and consultations, and I’ve already seen subtle improvements: her jaundice is easing, her energy is a little better, and her spirit is still so present.
But to continue this fight, I need help.
Mae needs more blood panels, more imaging (x-rays, ultrasounds), and possibly a CT scan), and real diagnostic attention - not just “end of life” advice.
I’m all in for her, but this crisis comes just after a financially devastating medical year of my own, and while I'm rebuilding, I simply wasn’t prepared for an emergency like this.
If Mae has ever made you smile, if she has ever brightened your day, or if you just believe in second chances - please consider donating to help her get the care she needs.
Every single dollar helps. And every share helps spread her story.
She’s not giving up. And I won’t either.
Thank you so much for reading, for caring, and for fighting alongside us.
With so much love and gratitude,
Lindy & Mae
