Support Free Tutoring For Disadvantaged Pupils

Donation protected
West Coast Runners are looking to raise £4000 for Action Tutoring, an education charity that provides free tutoring to Merseyside pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds. The charity helps them achieve a meaningful level of academic attainment, and progress to further education, employment or training.

A recent study by the Education Endowment Foundation estimates that school closures could wipe out an entire decade of progress in narrowing the attainment gap between disadvantaged pupils and their classmates. Sustained tutoring support will be needed to help these pupils catch up, but the charity usually relies on schools for 40% of its income, so they’re in real need of extra support right now.

That’s why we’re running a 31 hour relay race against some of the fastest running crews in the world. We’re taking on The Speed Project DIY, a radical underground racing event typically held in Los Angeles that has gone virtual for 2020. Teams will run covid-secure laps of their own cities and compete using GPS tracking to update a global leaderboard. All teams run simultaneously from 11:00am on Saturday 5th September, through the night until 6pm on Sunday evening.

This will be the ultimate endurance test for our crew of amateur runners. Your support will push us to the finish line and it will directly improve the life chances of disadvantaged school pupils across Merseyside.

How will your donation support pupils:

‘A donation of £10 will provide a pupil and a tutor with workbooks to support them for the whole academic year, enabling them to carefully and confidently build their subject knowledge, confidence and study skills’

‘A donation of £25 provides a pupil and tutor access to an online classroom for a whole academic year. This means pupils can still receive quality education irrespective of the current restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic’

‘In academic year 20-21, Action Tutoring will be supporting Year 6, 7 and 11 pupils in the Liverpool region. A donation of £50 would greatly contribute to the cost of a school programme for disadvantaged pupils in Liverpool or Wirral. Programmes are always free to pupils and their parents or guardians.’

‘A donation of just £7 covers the cost of a DBS check for tutors, enabling us to connect deserving pupils with high quality tutors across the country, ensuring these young people receive the support they need.’

£10 will provide disadvantaged pupils with noise cancelling headphones and graphics tablets to complete their online sessions, new for 2020, meaning they can continue their education despite potential visiting restrictions in schools’
