West Coast Multihull Racing Program

Mission

I plan to use my experience in the industry to create a west coast based platform for American youth to access, train and compete at an international level in the multihull high-performance sailing arena.  With the Olympics to be held in Long Beach, California, we are well positioned to develop the necessary critical mass of sailors to represent the USA in 2028.

Vision

The west coast offers a hub of talented and enthusiastic young sailors interested in getting involved in the multihull competitive scene but lacking the access and experience to make it happen. Limited boat availability and lack of organized opportunities act as barriers to entry for many of these interested sailors.

In 2010, I started the first official USA youth multihull program out of Sarasota Youth Sailing thanks to a generous donation from The Buzzelli Foundation , with a mission to promote and grow high-performance sailing. This program is now recognized as the catalyst for introducing High-Performance Sailing to the youth of America. Since inception, the program has qualified 5 teams to represent USA at ISAF Youth Worlds in Ireland, Cyprus, Portugal, Malaysia, and China.

My goal is to use the east coast program template to replicate this success on the west coast in order to allow everyone the opportunity to get involved and to maximize our multihull sailor pool.

Plan of Action

What I have learned is that all it takes is enthusiasm, experience, a few training boats and some interested participants to kick-start a development program!

Being the boat specifically designed for Youth Olympics and Youth Worlds, there is no better platform on which to build the program than the Nacra 15. Check out the Nacra 15's pathway for youth sailing here where they detail how the boat balances excitement and safety as a stepping stone boat to the Olympics. I plan to get two of these boats as well as a coach boat to develop the program and allow for sparring and team training.

During 2017, I spent some time hosting Nacra clinics and presenting to various groups of high performing youth sailors in California about these opportunities. I was overwhelmed by the enthusiastic reception and had many individuals proactively reach out to me to express interest in discovering their own Olympic path through the Nacra 15.

I have an extensive multihull resume and am passionately enthusiastic about the multihull movement. I know that we have a talented pool of sailors capable of becoming competitive on the world stage if we target our approach to a younger age bracket. I believe this program takes a big step towards this shared goal!
