Norma's Medical Fund

Donation protected
Most of you already know of the tragic events of February 21st, when one of the riders from our group was hit by car. That rider was Norma Moreno.

Norma Moreno is one of our dedicated and loyal riders. Norma, her husband JR and another couple were riding home after the ride and a short dinner when she was hit and severely injured. The driver did not slow down or stop. The car nearly hit JR as well. Norma and JR were about 2 blocks from the safety of their home.  They were doing nothing wrong. This could have happened to any of us.

The list of Norma's injuries is shocking – broken pelvis, broken vertebrae, numerous broken ribs, fractured skull and numerous internal injuries.

She was immediately taken by EMS to San Antonio Military Medical Center (as they are a trauma 1 center).  A team of doctors and surgeons worked on Norma to stabilize her internal, head and peripheral injuries.  She was in intensive care for many days just to recover from her serious head injuries.  Norma has recovered from her life-threatening injuries, but will remain in the hospital for several more months to recover from her broken bones and begin the long road of physical therapy.

Yvette and I visited with her and her family. We were amazed at Norma’s positive attitude and love for biking and riding with our group. One of the things she said, that I will never forget was, “I am just thankful that this happened to me and not my husband or any of you”. That was a very powerful statement coming from someone in constant pain and being in the hospital for a month already. She is truly a very special person. Norma’s husband JR is also amazing. He has been staying in the hospital at her side since the accident, leaving only when another family member comes in to stay with her.

The Moreno’s have an automotive parts business which has been in the family since the 1940’s. It is a small operation that Norma and JR work at daily. As you can imagine, they have both been absent from the business since this accident. JR tells me they are doing fine, but I know it is very difficult to manage a business from the hospital.

The funds we raise will go to assisting the family with the medical expenses and hopefully some of the loss of revenue of the family business. We have 5,000 followers and that is just a fraction of the bikers/cyclists in the San Antonio area. If everyone chips in we can make a difference.

Please join us in helping Norma Moreno on her road to recovery.
