WBYO Photography Program
Donation protected
In the summer of 2018, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to photograph Ken Opaleke receiving the order of Manitoba for his outstanding work with youth that spans nearly 3 decades. Ken is the executive director of the West Broadway Youth Outreach and has impacted thousands of youth in a positive and meaningful way.
What Ken didn’t realize, was that while he was inside the Legislative Building receiving his award, dozens of kids from the program had gathered outside to surprise him in a display of happiness and pride. He was swarmed in a massive group hug that I haven’t forgotten since. Not many moments have impacted me the same way in my 10 years as a photojournalist in Manitoba.
Since that day, I have been trying to figure out how I can use my experience and connections to give something to these wonderful and deserving people.
I have decided to fundraise to buy a number of cameras for the program, and I am going to donate my time to teach the youth how to use photography as a way of documenting and telling stories.
This is where you come in. The initial fundraising goal is $5000, which will be used to buy some DSLR cameras, a couple lenses, and some point and shoot cameras.
The long term goal will be to hold future events to show and to display the work that the WBYO students create. We will also aim to show the work in local media.
Major contributors will be mentioned on the WBYO site and at events, and companies will be mentioned in any media opportunities. All contributors will be invited to attend any showings of the resulting work created.
The West Broadway Youth Outreach is an after school drop in program that caters to children 4 and up in inner city. Each year, more than 800 kids take part in over 30 weekly programs that teach life skills and positive behaviour with a goal of helping the participants reach their potential.
Thank you,
