My name is Manda Lam and I am creating this fundraiser on behalf of my college best friend, Jackie Liu. For those of you who do not know, Jackie adopted Archie the mini poodle mix back in September 2019. Jackie had no intention of getting a dog, but upon seeing Archie in the kennel, she knew she had to take him home with her. Archie was one of the older dogs in the shelter (around 7 years old upon adoption back in 2019). After taking Archie home, Jackie found out that he loves to cuddle on the couch, play fetch, carry sticks along his walk around the neighborhood, and bug his sister Penny the Weiner Dog.
Unfortunately starting mid February 2021, Archie started limping on his back right leg and had trouble walking. His limping turned into hobbling on his three good legs. About a month later, Archie's back left leg also gave out as well. Archie is now unable to support himself up and Jackie needs to use a towel tied around his waist to hold up his back two legs for him to go potty. Archie also loves to eat but he has not been able to hold himself up to drink water or eat, so Jackie needs to hold up his bowl for him in order to do so.
The vet diagnosed Archie with torn ligaments on both of his back legs. Archie now needs to have a surgery called Tibia Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO), which is scheduled for May 28th. The goal of the surgery is to reduce strain on the knees and ligaments. The surgery would do so by placing a stainless steel bone plate on the thigh and shin bones to hold the two bones in their new alignment in both hind legs. The reported success rate of this procedure and dogs returning to full function is 90-95%. However, the cost of the surgery could reach an upwards of $6,000, and that does not include the physical therapy for Archie after the surgery to ensure full recovery. All proceeds from this GoFundMe will go directly to Archie's surgery and physical therapy for recovery.
By donating to this GoFundMe, it will allow Jackie to not worry about the financial burden of Archie's surgery, and focus on staying by Archie's side since he is currently immobile.
