Tim Berry… If you don't know him, let me introduce you.
Initially licensed in 1973, Tim is one of the most humble men you will ever meet in Amateur Radio. He lives and breathes radio in any form, whether his job as a broadcast engineer or as his hobby. He graciously gives back to the entire East Tennessee community as a labor of love, often keeping him away from family and friends while maintaining and servicing 19 repeaters for the East Tennessee Ham Radio and GMRS communities.
On March 31st, 2022, a devastating windstorm occurred during the night, with 70+ MPH winds causing the demise of a 140ft Rohn 25g tower. It is unknown when the tower was initially installed; however, it was on the property when Tim acquired it in 1985 and has been maintained by him since that time.
As a result of the tower collapse, it has indefinitely taken down three repeaters. The hardline and antennas have been destroyed and are beyond repair for the following:
These repeaters are a significant loss to Blount County, Tennessee, and the frequent travelers that go to Cades Cove, as these repeaters provide the best coverage of that part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
The cost of the replacement tower is $14,000. In addition to that, it will cost an additional $6,000 to erect it. Cement work will also have to be done for the base and guy wire anchors, and also electrical work. The cost of the cement work, electrical work, and permits is currently being evaluated and will be in addition to the totals given here.
Unfortunately, the tower site only had liability insurance coverage, putting the entire replacement cost on Tim’s shoulders. That’s where you, the general public, Ham Radio, and GMRS communities come in. Any amount you can donate, whether great or small, would be very much appreciated. Feel free to donate here on GoFundMe or via Paypal using friends and family to: tberry1<at>gmail.com
Mailing a check or money order is also an option. Please put in the memo “Tower Replacement Gift” and send it to:
