The Background Story
My name is Lisa some of you may know, my boyfriend Kevin has been fighting a courageous battle with end-stage liver disease. This past year he has spent months at a time in the local hospital Baystate. Then months in Boston at Mass General Hospital. During this time after working a long day I traveled the 2 hours to visit him and 2 hours back to go to work that morning, often. Thankfully after a long and difficult road, he received the news we had been praying for: a matching liver was available. A day we were truly unsure would come in time to for him.
Getting through a liver transplant is a monumental feat, but the financial aftermath can be just as overwhelming as the surgery itself.
The Surgery & Current Status
Kevin underwent a successful liver transplant in April 2026. While the surgery went well and we are infinitely grateful for his second chance at life, the road to full recovery is just beginning. There have been some setbacks during this period. He is currently doing well but the healing process will take many years of intensive care.
The Financial Burden
While we are focused on his health, the financial reality of a transplant is staggering. Even with insurance, the medical bills, day to day bills and expenses are mounting quickly. Beyond the hospital stay itself, there are significant costs that insurance doesn't cover:
• Frequent Travel: The transplant center is almost 2 hours away. We are currently traveling back and forth multiple times a week for essential follow-up appointments and lab work. Its over half a tank of gas there and back each time which is $40 - 50 for per trip.
• Parking: Even with the patient hospital discount parking while at the appointments or labs is $15-20 each visit.
• Highway tolls: One way to Boston from our home is $10 in tolls there and back is $20.
• Medical supplies: As you can imagine his wound is large and requires changing the dressings several times a day. Each box of dressings and drainage supplies is $10-20 with a box typically only lasting a day.
• Post-Op Medications: The cost of anti-rejection medications with the specialized prescriptions ongoing care is extremely expensive. He will need to be on these medications the rest of his life.
• Living Expenses: The Dr's have said Kevin will be unable to work for at least 2 years and I have had to take time off to be his primary caregiver and driver.
How You Can Help
We are reaching out to our community to ask for help easing this burden so Kevin can focus entirely on healing. Your donations of any size will go directly toward:
• Outstanding medical bills and co-pays.
• Gas, tolls, parking and lodging if needed for trips to the hospital.
• Daily living expenses while he recovers. A $20 donation would cover tolls or parking
$40 would be half a tank of gas to get to Boston and back
If you aren't able to donate, please consider sharing this page with your network or sending a prayer or positive thought our way. Every bit of support—whether a donation or a share—means the world to us.
Thank you for your help and being part of Kevin's journey back to health and a new life. We truly appreciate you taking the time to read, share or donate.
