Wayne’s spinal cord injury
Early June 2020 my big brother Wayne
Duckworth had an accident, which left him with a broken neck, leaving him paralysed from the chest down.
Amidst the Covid-19 outbreak and visiting
restrictions within the hospital my family and I have had very limited visits with wayne which as you can imagine has been extremely tough.
Wayne had to undergo 9.5 hours of
emergency surgery to stabilise the break of
his 6th vertebrae and fractured 5th vertebrae and to relieve pressure from his spinal cord,
after the surgery was moved to ICU.
The break has been stabilised but the damage to the spinal cord may never heal. Wayne had
to be placed on a ventilator and had to have a
tracheostomy as he was unable to breath for
himself.
After 3 weeks in ICU wayne was transferred
to Southport, to the North West Regional
Spinal Injuries Centre to begin his
rehabilitation, he has amazed us all with his
strength and determination and with the help from specialists was able to start breathing
again for himself after nearly two weeks at
Southport, which then meant he could have
the tracheostomy removed, and start focusing on his other rehab, since then wayne has been working hard in the gym and is able to move
around in a powered wheelchair.
I can’t tell you how proud we are of wayne he has managed to stay so positive, strong and
determined and still have a sense of humour
whilst having to come to terms with his life
changing injury.
We have been informed that certain
equipment is not currently funded through
the NHS but is accessible to purchase
privately.
For this reason I have setup this go fund me
page, I want wayne to continue to thrive and
want him to be able to live the best life he can and as independently as he can when he is
discharged, I want him to be able to access the equipment he needs to enable this.
Wayne is very fond of the Lake District and
never managed Scafell pike himself, so Harvey and I next spring will be climbing in his honour, if anyone else would like to join us please pm

enable him to live a independent future.
