Gerald Wayman is a multiple kidney transplant recipient. He has a rare disease that attacks his kidney. He was blessed enough to receive a kidney from his brother about 11 years ago, only to find out five years later that the disease attacked that kidney as well. At that time when others were being tested as possible donors, his cousin, who was a healthy young father, died, and Gerald was able to receive his kidney. Five years later, that kidney failed as well, and now Gerald has been on dialysis for nearly a year.
During the past dialysis and transplants, Gerald was able to find the strength to fight his poor health and push through while continuing to work, maintain his community service and support his family. However after eleven years of dealing with transplant medications, the toll the disease has had on his kidney and other organs, and his family has been tremendous! His wife, Shauna, has fought by his side with a smile for years! She almost qualified as a donor, but was denied.
He is sick daily, has had many surgeries, and is weak and unable to work. They are working to qualify for disability that could be months away and only provides a portion his salary. The medical bills and trips from home to try for yet another transplant has left Gerald depleted and worn out.
The funds given would help Gerald's family (three children out of eight still at home) as they struggle to pay bills, buy groceries, and drive hours to medical doctors, surgeries, and dialysis.
We have watched as his body is literally fading away, but he is still fighting for life.
The situation has deeply touched our hearts and is urgent to help relieve some of the stress they are facing.
