Help Build an Arts Village in Zambia

                       Help us make WAYI WAYI CREATIVES VILLAGE a reality

Designed to creatively empower local community and honour Zambian ecology, Wayi Wayi Creatives Village is our response to Covid-19.

Our Challenge: Many families in Livingstone and its surrounding areas (Southern Province of Zambia) have lost their income because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Our Response: Now in development, the Wayi Wayi Creatives Village in Sichiyasa, Village A in Livingstone District, addresses immediate needs for local employment to counteract the severe economic downturn in arts and tourism. Longer-term, this green project will boost livelihoods and provide employment, arts training, and mentoring for local people while inspiring and supporting creative workers.

Our Mission: To create a lasting chain reaction of economic, cultural, and social value connecting the Livingstone area to the world through art.

Please join Agness and Lawrence Yombwe and the WWCV board, in this exciting enterprise.

How You Can Help
Funding to jumpstart Wayi Wayi Creatives Village has come primarily from friends and family from Zambia, Norway, Japan, Denmark, Global Sojourns Giving Circle, and our international board of directors, which includes artists, educators, and arts administrators in the U.K. and U.S.A. Your gifts to our GoFundMe campaign will build on our progress by:

> drilling a borehole to supply fresh water
> ensuring security by completing construction of a caretaker’s house and outside kitchen
> paying the caretaker’s salary
> laying the foundations for residency studios
> maintaining plantings and infrastructure

WAYI WAYI CREATIVES VILLAGE today
In 2020, Agness successfully approached Senior Chief Mukuni of the Leya people for access to land. The Royal Establishment gave us 3.4 hectares (8.4 acres) of arable land in Sichiyasa Village A, of Livingstone District.

So far, we have completed initial landscaping and architectural site plans. We have already employed dozens of local families for clearing, constructing biofences, planting crops and over 600 trees, and laying platforms for the caretaker’s house and toilets. You can see the progress at at this link: WWCV Village Progress Photo Board

WAYI WAYI CREATIVES VILLAGE tomorrow
With your help we will build on this progress by completing the critical infrastructure needs outlined above.  We plan to begin training programmes and artist residencies by January 2022, so any funds raised beyond our $8000 goal will go toward planning residency studios and welcoming visiting artists.

Our Goals
-to provide a safe and stimulating place for artists and creative individuals (both local and international) to gain inspiration and grow professionally;
-to encourage environmentally sustainable development and artistic creativity as a means to support the local economy and green tourism;
-to empower women's groups and youth through skills-training in the arts.

Our Leadership
WWCV founder and director Agness Yombwe is a professionally trained artist and educator who has, alongside husband and fellow artist Lawrence Yombwe, provided innovative arts programming in Livingstone for 14 years, and in Zambia over 30 years.  Her initiative, advocacy and organizational capabilities ideally position her to lead this project. Recently, Agness’s initiative in starting Wayi Wayi Creatives Village in response to the pandemic was recognized on the World Bank’s Creative Resilience feature on Instagram.

WWCV Board members include:  Anne Bean, installation and performance artist, London; Deborah Hoover, arts management consultant, Boston; and Ruth Stanford, sculptor and arts educator, Atlanta, Georgia.

Our Commitment
Every dollar, every pound, every kwacha, every euro, and every yen donated will support our efforts at Wayi Wayi Creatives Village.  Please join us in raising USD $8,000 to employ, empower, and make a lasting difference.

Wayi Wayi Creatives Village is a non-profit organization registered with the Republic of Zambia.
