Eco Youths Network (EYN) is a legally registered Community Based Organization with registration number WCBO/25/1110 located in Central Uganda. It aims at promoting sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation through the youths in the districts of Wakiso, Kiboga and Mityana. Several local schools joined the EYN to receive advice and support in the establishment of edible gardens and also environmental conservation clubs led by students themselves.

Earlier this year, thanks to the incredible support of our community, we successfully raised funds to purchase land for Eco Youths Network Uganda. The successful campaign makes the beginning of our long term visioning and commitments, i.e. we want to create a permanent space where environmental conservation, sustainable agriculture, education, and community initiatives can thrive together.

Ever since we acquired the land, we have been trying to develop it into a productive farm. For example, we have been able to plant coffee, corn, Irish potatoes and bananas. We also wish the farm to become the home of tree nurseries, vegetables, edible forests and also a ground of agricultural workshops that we offer to community youths, but its all in vain with out a permanent water source.

Located near the equator, Central Uganda is subject to a tropical climate and experiences two dry seasons throughout the year: from December to February and from June to September. The effects of climate change only make the seasons more extreme. For this year, prolonged dry conditions have already been predicted, linked to El Niño-driven ocean temperatures.

During these times, all efforts to keep water in the ground, e.g. through mulching, and providing shadow, are not sufficient, and an additional water source is required to keep the crops alive. Unfortunately, there is currently no such source available close to the EYN farm.

We are setting up this fundraiser to solve the water problem on our farm: A shallow water well can generate over 5 000 liters of water per day according to statistics in our area. This is far more than enough for us to have a healthy farm because with this water, we can water all the crops on the farm. It enables us to continue running all our programs effectively with thriving plants.

The well needs to be 20 meters deep to reach the groundwater level at the location of our farm. Therefore, specialized expertise and equipment is needed – this is what the money collected in this fundraiser will be used for. We surveyed different options for permanent water sources in this area, and this turned out to be the simplest and cheapest.
