Water Sanitation Project in Guatemala

Hey everyone! Thank you for taking a moment to learn about my upcoming mission. Most of you already know about me but for those that do not, please let me introduce myself. My name is Johnny Ahern and I have an upcoming goal that I would like to accomplish.
I am a person that loves to be involved with my community and I volunteer for many various events. When there is an opportunity for me to give back, I jump on that opportunity. As a 10-year Army Combat veteran, I feel that it is in my blood to do what I can for others. Two years ago, my business partners (Kevin & Brad) opened the first Aroma Joe's Coffee shop here in Massachusetts (Leominster) and one of our core beliefs is "Community". As a business, we take pride on the involvement that we have within our nearby towns, whether it is donating a gift basket, providing free coffee for events or supporting a family in need with the passing of a family member.
Through Aroma Joe's, I learned of the Leominster, MA Rotary Club. Rotary is a global network of 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves. Becoming a Rotarian has been an honor and I am seeking more ways to get involved. Recently, I learned of a Humanitarian Project taking place in Guatemala. Of course, I immediately volunteered because I will have the chance to help out with something in a different part of the world while representing our local Rotary and be part of the 25 Rotarians representing our District (7910).
The objective of this project is to decrease absenteeism of students and improve sanitation and hygiene to 23 schools by:
1. Providing wash stations in the schools.
2. Providing adequate toilets.
3. Providing segregated bathrooms.
4. Providing comprehensive hygiene and menstrual education to the students and teachers.
5. Providing safe water to drink and to cook the school meal.
Considering that Preventive Health Education is the main tool to avoid more serious diseases that can even cause death, Lack of sanitation contributes to approximately 700,000 child deaths every year due to diarrhea.
Chronic diarrhea can have a negative effect on child development (both physical and cognitive). In addition, lack of facilities can prevent students from attending school, impose a burden on women and diminish productivity. Therefore hygiene training will give these communities the opportunity to improve their hygiene habits and provide them with the appropriate tools and facilities to have a proper environment and thus improve the quality of life of families in general.
This project will impact 3,926 children from 6 different Guatemala departments: Chiquimula, Huehuetenango, Quiché, Sololá, Escuintla and Zacapa base in the area of influence of local Rotary clubs around the selected schools.
Your support would help me attend this Guatemala Project and allow me to give back to these children and school staff. Funds raised will be put toward travel expenses to and from Guatemala. Thank you again and please share! I can't wait for this project!
