Under the Taliban two thirds of the population in Afghanistan now live in poverty and rely on humanitarian aid for survival. The economy has collapsed, and there is very little opportunity for employment. According to UNHCR their largest humanitarian program in the world is currently in Afghanistan.

The purpose of this Go Fund Me account is to raise capital for a family of 13 in Kabul, Afghanistan, to purchase a Water Purification Plant up for sale by the current owner. This family has been surviving only through monthly sponsorship since the Taliban takeover in August 2021, but they now have the opportunity to become financially independent through purchasing this water purification business. Members of this family include 2 retired elderly parents, 4 adult sons of whom two are married, and 5 young children. I have gotten to know one son particularly well through a partnership over the last five years where I have helped him with his English, master’s thesis, scholarship applications, VISA documents, resumes, job search strategies, and job networking. His name is M. Ahmadzai (due to the current political situation it is safest to only give his first initial). He is well-educated with both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business, and he speaks fluent English.

Before the Taliban took over the country, M. Ahmadzai had a good job with the prior government and was supporting his entire household. When the Taliban took over they eliminated most government positions including his. Since that time A. has not been able to find another job despite an ongoing job search. I know M to be a hard worker, very intelligent, extremely positive in disposition, compassionate, resourceful, outgoing and engaging, supportive of women, forward thinking, and with deep ties to his family, community and country. With those personal characteristics I believe that he will certainly make a success of this water purification plant business which is for sale in a neighboring village.
