Water Conversion for Low Income Households

California is currently going through a mega-drought, the likes of which we have not seen in over 1,200 years of record. With lakes drying up and water supply dwindling, water security is becoming a serious issue, and this will cause the price of water to drastically increase in the coming years.

While we know that some people can afford to install water capture and reuse systems in their homes, we also know that a greater majority of people won't have enough money to afford these systems and will be impacted by expensive water bills that affect their household.

The average household of 4 people does approximately 8 loads of laundry per week at 25 gallons per load, meaning that around 200 gallons of water go down the drain each and every week. What if, instead, that water could be recycled and reused again? Well, the good news is, with your help, it can be a reality!

Our vision is to raise $3,000 as a pilot program so that 3 low-income families can have laundry-to-landscape systems installed in their homes. A laundry-to-landscape system takes the already-used laundry water (better known as greywater) and pumps it out to trees, plants, and shrubs to keep the landscape green and beautify the community. This greywater replaces the need to use and pay for municipal water for irrigation.

We want to do this in low-income communities, so we can provide an example of what subsidies can achieve in households of less financial means across the state, the west, and even the country. If we do this, we can reduce these households’ water usage by up to 50%, significantly lower their water bills, help to green their community and create greater fire resilience.

But, it gets even better: we’ve already secured a professional water capture and reuse design and installation company that has agreed to train and supervise local people in these communities to install these systems. These newly trained installers will come away with a new vocation to earn money for their families in the new drought era.

We appreciate any contribution you can make to our goal of $3,000. Together we can make a difference. We can show people how to create long-term water sustainability as a community. That’s what it’s all about–no one gets left behind because we’re all in this together.
