WATDAFAC TOYS: Juguetes en construcción

¡Hola! ¡Buenas!

¿QUIÉN SOY?:

Me llamo Manuel Donada (más conocido como Lolo) y soy un juguetero, ilustrador y diseñador gráfico de Madrid. Mi carrera es amplia y ya tengo una edad (es cierto, internet lo verifica).

En 2018, después de años siendo freelance (desde 1998) y haber pasado por Cartoon Network decidí continuar con un proyecto que me lleva acompañando desde

2012 pero que antes era algo bien distinto: una galería de arte.

Watdafac Gallery (que así se llamaba) mutó de forma natural y se convirtió en WATDAFAC TOYS , mi nueva "marca" de juguetes hechos a mano y por la que he luchado sin descanso desde entonces como una pantera defendiendo y cuidando a sus hijos enfermitos (lo que no ha sido fácil, ya que la cultura toy aún está aterrizando en España y el camino es largo).

¡El nuevo espacio NO es un proyecto que empieza, ya está en marcha!. Algunos ejemplos del catálogo:

En 2023, ya que la cosa profesionalmente pintaba muy bien y necesitaba más espacio para evolucionar, abrirme más al público y aportar mi visión a la escena "toy making" de España , decidí dar el salto y abrir mi propio espacio/studio/showroom. Un lugar para el disfrute de todos y donde poder continuar con mi locura.

Mi intención es crear un espacio donde se lleven a cabo exposiciones de artistas de todo el planeta, charlas, cursos y presentaciones de juguetes de artistas nacionales e internacionales. También un lugar donde pueda producir piezas para otra gente fascinante, apostar por una comunidad de artesanos, vendedores, curiosos, aficionados, etc, y crear un lazo de conexión entre escenas del gremio. ¡CASI NADA!.

PROBLEMA:

Después de un año peleándome con las obras de un local endemoniado donde la ruina y el desastre acampan a sus anchas, ha llegado el momento de levantar la cabeza y pedir "ayudita" para que todo esto no termine mal y tenga que cerrar. Ya no doy económicamente (ni casi emocionalmente) para más.

Me da mucha vergüenza mendigar dinero y soy muy consciente que desde fuera puede sonar extraño (caradura) pero creo que es un proyecto interesante y único en la ciudad de Madrid. Además, me da pena haber invertido tanto tiempo/dinero y, ahora que casi lo tengo todo a puntito, muera y desaparezca por siempre jamás de los james, amén.

(Ya he hecho mucho y ¡ESTO PROMETE!. Cada día hay algún avance porque rendirme no entra en mis planes. El local se mueve y se arrastra buscando la luz).

La inversión que he hecho yo solo ha sido mucho más de lo que esperaba y puedo afrontar. ¡Un gran susto!. Todo lo que he invertido en el local me ha dejado aplastado como una medusa en la orilla de las playas de Benidorm. Parece muerta pero todavía tiene vida. ¡Estoy MUY VIVO!.

(Lo mejor fue cuando se me cayó la puerta y la tuve que cambiar. Ahora está bien bonita. Luego se soltó el cierre porque estaba oxidado y casi me amputa los pies. ¡Qué risa!).

Hello!

WHO AM I?

My name is Manuel Donada (better known as Lolo), and I am a toymaker, illustrator, and graphic designer from Madrid. My career is extensive (it's true, the internet can confirm that).

In 2018, after years of freelancing (since 1998) and a stint at Cartoon Network, I decided to continue with a project that has been with me since 2012 but was something quite different back then: an art gallery.

Watdafac Gallery (as it was called) naturally transformed into WATDAFAC TOYS, my new "brand" of handmade toys that I have tirelessly championed since then, like a panther protecting and caring for its ailing cubs (which hasn't been easy, as the toy culture is still emerging in Spain, and the journey is long).

The new venture is not a project that's just beginning; it's already in progress!.

In 2023, as things were professionally looking very promising and I needed more space to grow, open up to the public, and contribute my vision to the "toy making" scene in Spain, I decided to take the leap and open my own space/studio/showroom. A place for everyone's enjoyment and where I can continue with my madness.

My intention is to create a space where exhibitions of artists from all over the world, talks, courses, and presentations of toys by national and international artists can take place. It's also a place where I can produce pieces for other fascinating people, support a community of artisans, sellers, enthusiasts, and create a connection between different scenes in the industry. Quite a lot, right?

THE ISSUE:

After a year of battling with the cursed premises where ruin and chaos reign freely, it's time to lift my head and ask for a little "help" so that this doesn't end in disaster, forcing me to close. I can't afford it anymore, neither financially nor emotionally.

I'm very embarrassed to ask for money, and I'm well aware that it may sound strange (or cheeky) from the outside, but I believe it's an interesting and unique project in the city of Madrid. Besides, it pains me to have invested so much time and money, and now that I'm almost there, it might all die and disappear forever.

(I've already done a lot, and THIS LOOKS PROMISING! Every day brings some progress because giving up is not in my plans. The space is shifting and crawling, seeking the light).

The investment I've made on my own has been much more than I expected and can handle. A big scare! Everything I've poured into the space has left me flattened like a jellyfish on the shores of Benidorm. It looks dead, but it still has life. I am VERY MUCH ALIVE!.

(The best part was when the door fell off, and I had to replace it. Now, it looks really nice. Then, the latch came loose because it was rusty, and it almost amputated my feet. What a laugh!).

The donations I'm requesting are not for going on a trip, buying a car, or dining at expensive restaurants. They are for the following:

Legal paperwork: activity and opening licenses, trademark registrations, insurance/alarm...

Facade and showcase renovation: the external facade of the premises is protected, and if anything were to happen to it, the fine would be €100,000. Since we don't want that, I'd have to sand, treat, and repaint it, especially to prevent anyone from getting hurt if the glass sign falls and goes to prison.

Various repairs: broken floor tiles, wooden windows and doors that don't close, crooked stairs (the city council requires me to replace them, among other things), old showcase...

Furniture: more storage cabinets, shelves, showcases, and proper lighting.

Bathroom: broken tiles, poorly installed plumbing, and a rotten wooden window.

Electrical installation: adding more outlets since there are very few, and they're in unexpected places.

Labor and materials.

ATTENTION!: IF I SURPASS THE INITIAL AMOUNT, I WOULD LIKE TO BE ABLE TO FIX THE SERIOUS LEAKS I'VE BEEN DEALING WITH SINCE I GOT THE KEYS TO THE PLACE (a real nightmare). The treatment costs around €7,000.
