Wataba Love for The Caplins
Donation protected
Lynn and Bruce Caplin, our neighbors on Rainbow Lake aka Wataba Lake, need our help. On Friday, September 29th they had massive flooding during the torrential rainstorm. The lake’s dam became completely backed up due to plant debris, and the amount of rain coming down for such a long period of time caused flooding. Lake residents said that they have never seen flooding like this. Most neighbors experienced flooded lawns, streets, and other minor damage.
Unfortunately, the Caplins are having to manage the brunt of the storm damage. The flood breached their storm wall and flooded their entire first floor. The initial estimate from ServPro is $8-$10k. Plus they will need to replace some appliances. Insurance will not cover any of this. The initial estimate for full remediation and replacements is $12,500.
To compound their financial burden, this past year they have had to manage Bruce’s diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma in April. He’s been going to weekly chemo treatments at Yale and working less, as a result of his health issues. Treatments continue through December before he takes a break and assesses other options like stem cell replacement. The good news is he’s been responding well to treatment. The bad news is that the $7,500 deductible on his health insurance runs annually from 9/1-8/31. It just triggered again so they are having to manage the deductible now. Anything that we can raise over the $12,500 will go toward their medical costs.
They were hesitant to move forward with a gofundme, but the financial struggle at this point is daunting. Anything you can do to support these friends, neighbors, and for some of you, family, is much appreciated.
