Wasps Women - Accommodation & Travel Costs

UPDATE

Due to the overwhelming support this fundraiser has received, we wanted to say thank you for your continued support: it means the world to us and has given all of us a huge boost in morale! We have a few updates to share:

1. Unfortunately, we were unable to book accommodation last minute for our DMP fixture but we have upgraded the bus for this weekend meaning we will arrive after a comfortable journey ready to play some great rugby.

2. We have updated our target and will continue to use this page to fundraise for the rest of the season

3. In line with our updated target we have drafted a budget with key areas for spending:
  • Travel costs and accommodation for overnight stays for away trips
  • Post-match meals for the playing group after training
  • Expedited diagnostic scans for any acute injuries (MRIs etc)
  • Cover medical costs eg. Tape
  • Physio support: ability to employ a second physio to help on match day and the option to access soft tissue treatment for players on recovery days

Who are we?

Wasps Women are playing in the Allianz P15s, the leading domestic women's competition in world rugby, for the rest of the 22/23 season and we are based in Acton, West London.

What do we need?

At the start of this 2022/23 season, Wasps Women were supported by both Wasps FC - our amateur club in London - and Wasps Rugby, which included Wasps Rugby Men's team and Wasps Netball. Following Wasps Holdings Limited going out of business, Wasps Women are now only supported by Wasps FC whose generosity has allowed us to keep our place in the league.

As the season progresses however we are now finding ourselves in a position where we need support to fund our travelling & accommodation costs. For example, our league fixture against Darlington Mowden Park Sharks (DMP Sharks) originally scheduled on December 10th was cancelled due to frozen grounds, and we are now travelling to DMP Sharks on February 11th. Because of the last-minute cancellation, we were unable to get a refund and are now unable to cover all of our travel costs

A twin room in a local hotel would cost c. £68, which would allow two players to travel the night before and save a 10h journey on the coach. Breakfast comes at £9.99 which players would also have to pay for. Therefore, taking a full 23 players squad as well as staff overnight would result in an approximative £1,500 excluding travel costs.

All initial funds collected would be directed towards travel and accommodation costs for this DMP fixture.

All additional support is very much welcome and if we do fundraise over our goal the money will go directly to team travel, expenses, accommodation and broader team resources.

Why it matters & what we have to say

Wasps Women are now operating as an amateur section, in what is increasingly becoming a professionalised league. We as players are painfully aware of the challenges this is creating for us. While they are many things that affect on-pitch performance; we believe these resources will still allow us to develop, continue to play some great rugby, and set players up for an excellent continued career in the Allianz P15s in whatever teams we move to next. We know your support will help us control some more controllables, maintain our standards and preserve the Wasps culture and environment we love.
