Obituary
Karissa Ann Reid, age 31, of Sweeny, Texas went to heaven to be with Jesus on Saturday, June 5, 2021 at 5:24 a.m. after a hard-fought battle with cancer, but she never gave up. #warriorsneverstopfightingTeamKarissa

She was born Karissa Ann Dobesh on January 4, 1990 in Richmond, Texas to Judy Ann (Matlock) and Darwin Dobesh.

She is survived by her loving husband of 9 years, Douglas Reid, and their two beautiful daughters, Kinsleigh and Kathleen (Kate) Reid. She was a very proud, loving mother and wife. She is also survived by her parents Darwin and Judy Dobesh, her brothers Jonathon Dobesh, Blake Dobesh and wife Jackie. She loved and was blessed to have her in-laws Richard (Ricky) and Jonellen Reid, sister-in-law Joy Davis and husband Daniel, and brother-in-law Michael Reid. Karissa also leaves behind her nieces AliRae, Lainey, and Kendall Dobesh, and her nieces and nephews Reid, Annelise, Simon, Vivian, and Crosby Davis. Karissa is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. She will be dearly missed by her long-time best friend/sister, Jo Anna Gonzales Gonsoulin.

Karissa was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents Elizabeth Bremser LaVois and James Matlock and her paternal grandparents Willie Mae Dobesh and Darwin Dobesh Sr., who met her at the gates of heaven with open arms.

Karissa loved spending time with her family, being a teacher to her girls, doing crafts and reading lots of books. She was active in her church, FBC Sweeny and was an inspiration to all. She will be sorely missed, and we are all thankful for the time we had with her.

Karissa’s recently adopted kids need their mom to win her fight against advanced ovarian and endometrial cancer.

I can’t believe my 31-year-old niece, Karissa Reid, is facing such a crisis.  I lost my mom to breast cancer when she was 55 years-old and knowing that my niece is going through this at such a young age, and such an advanced stage, is heartbreaking.

After additional weight gain due to Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), both Karissa and her husband, Doug, began a weight loss journey in January 2019 and each lost 185+lbs.  With a new outlook on life, they adopted 2 beautiful girls (full siblings, ages 2 and 3) through Child Protective Services (CPS) and Karissa has enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom.  They are still hoping to adopt additional children.

Now, this young woman faces the challenge of her life.  Karissa was diagnosed with stage 3+ ovarian cancer and stage 4B endometrial cancer.   After an extensive surgery in December 2020, Karissa began her chemo treatments in February 2021.  Surgery was delayed due to her contracting with COVID.  In the meantime, her tumor ruptured spreading cancer throughout her abdomen.  Therefore, her full hysterectomy also included removal of the peritoneum lining, appendix, part of the liver, part of diaphragm, cancer off the outside layer of the colon and bladder, and several lymph nodes were removed.  Karissa lost her hair after her very first chemo treatment!  Her bright blue wig exemplifies her fighting spirit!

Although Doug works full-time as an Instrument Technician for Wood Group and carries health insurance on the family, they need financial assistance with medical expenses, including high out-of-pocket insurance deductibles, prescription medication, transportation costs for her 100-mile round trip to medical treatments, medical tests,  and doctor visits, and other support services to help during this time.  These costs are estimated at $50,000 from the start of this journey through the next year and a half of which $20,000 is needed immediately for expenses already incurred.

Both sets of grandparents are deeply involved in the care and transportation needs of Karissa and the care of the children.

When asked what keeps her motivated to keep going, she says…
“God #1 ... I know he has a plan for me and a reason behind all this.  My family and friends ... I have a huge support system.  I know losing the weight happened for a reason and I believe it was part of God's plan to make me stronger for this ... I don’t think I would still be here if I had not done that.“

We thank you for acquainting yourself with Karissa and her family’s plight.  Karissa needs prayers, awareness, and financial support.  First, we ask that you pray for Karissa and share her GoFundMe link with all your personal and social network contacts.  Then, easing Doug and Karissa’s financial burden and its associated stress, places Karissa in a better place to recover.  If you are able to help, your financial support is very much appreciated.

With your help, family support, and God’s blessings, Karissa is looking forward to spending a long lifetime with her family.

May God bless you and your family.
