They say it takes a village to raise a child and the Reiger family needs that village. These two are always the first to reach out, lend a hand and support those around them and now they need some support of their own.
Cam and Cassandra Reiger are the parents of a Elliahna (2) and Grayson (5 months).
Life with two was busy but wonderful. Grayson already had a diagnosis in utero of a double aortic arch and so they knew that following his birth he would need to be assessed and would need heart surgery to fix it. He was born healthy and strong and cardiologists were happy to wait a little bit before proceeding with surgery - more time to let him grow and be as strong as possible for treatment.
Grow he did, Grayson was big and strong, loved to talk and is the king of raspberries. Thankfully he is so strong as their world was rocked by a diagnosis that would set them all on long journey of fear, medical appointments, surgeries, hospital stays and months of being away from home, friends and family.
Brain cancer. It is quite possibly one of the most terrifying diagnosis to receive and even more so when you hear that it is your child who will be battling the disease and he's only 3 and half months old.
On Friday, May 11th of this year everything changed. Cassandra was recording Grayson playing and managed to capture some video of an odd eye movement. Sensing something was off she sent the video to her sister, a nurse, who in turn showed it to a Paediatrician friend who recommended they take Grayson to emergency right away. They did and within a few hours of taking that video they were on a terrifying journey to save Grayson's life.
Following a CT scan that showed fluid on his brain as well as a mass, they were airlifted to Saskatoon. He would undergo an MRI on Monday morning and was taken straight in to the operating room. It was a 9.5 hour surgery, each minute excruciating to wait through and also good news as the longer he was under the knife the better the odds they could remove the whole tumour and they did. A tumour the size of a plum in the brain of a 3 month old. This child is amazing and a fighter. He has become known as Kreiger Grayson, German for warrior. How fitting.
This little boy continues to fight and they need your help as they embark on these next stages of treatment. They have been in Saskatoon since surgery on May 14th and won't be able to return home to Regina until his treatments are complete, 6 months from now.
As you can imagine, this is devastating for everyone but being together is what matters. Cam, Cassandra and Ahna are staying in Saskatoon while he continues chemo and treatment and will travel with Grayson to Winnipeg when he goes there for the second portion of his treatment including chemo as well as stem cell harvesting and transplant.
While they are with Grayson they are unable to work and are relying on EI for finances and as you can imagine this is incredibly tough. We are hoping with the Go Fund Me dollars we can help support them financially so they can continue to focus solely on getting Grayson through his treatment.
Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
