On February 17th we came home to find our condo building on fire. The condo directly below us caught fire when the dryer malfunctioned. This fire led to 8 surrounding units being seriously affected. Exactly two weeks later, NJ shut down due to Covid-19. We spent two weeks in a hotel and then moved to a temporary apartment. All work on our condo was stopped for several months.

After almost 8 months in temporary housing with none of our belongings and on COVID lockdown, our home is still unfinished. At this point, our insurance for temporary housing has been exhausted and we have been unable to get any further extensions from USAA. As of October 1st, we will have no place to live. With all of the mounting costs over the last 8 months related to the fire, we do not have the finances to find reasonable and temporary living arrangements needed for 2-3 months. Additionally, 1) it is difficult to find short-term leases, 2) they add 50% to the monthly cost because it is short term, and 3) no one is willing to take four people in during COVID.
My mom is self-employed and has worked for the past 18 years with cancer patients. But her business has taken a significant hit because of Covid-19 and the inability to see people in person. The mounting stress of the fire and finances has affected her health.
In October, we took in my nephew so he could have a second chance at life and finish his last two years of high school. The fire uprooted him just as he began to settle into a new school and routine. This has been especially hard on him. This additional move because the condo is not rebuilt will again be another upheaval and change for him in the midst of trying to do virtual school.
My boyfriend and I have been fortunate enough to keep working full time throughout the pandemic. However, the combination of resettling my nephew, financially compensating for my mom's business, fire related costs and student loans, our finances have been completely drained.
We are seeking help from friends and family so that we have some financial support to find a place for the next few months until our home is complete and to be able to stay together as a family unit. It is not easy for us to reach out, but so much has happened to us starting with the fire. I know that many families have also been unduly burdened during COVID. We respectfully ask that if you can help us get through the next 2-3 months, we would be so grateful.
