Kakavem is a remote village in Timor-Leste. In August 2025, a group of students from Warrane College UNSW will travel to Kakavem for a period of two weeks and assist the local community with the construction of a library for the children of the town school.
This project will be beneficial in both educational and personal development for the school's students, and will be an investment in the future of the community.
The project is being organised by Mr. Krispin Fernandes, the father of a current Warrane resident. Each participant of the workcamp will pay for his own airfares and upkeep -- funds raised will be used to support the building of the library.
If you'd like to help or get involved, please be generous and contact us, and make your pledge today.

A Dream for a Brighter Future
In the small rural village of Kakavem, located in the Lautem municipality of Timor-Leste, children dream of a space to read, learn, and grow. But their school library is in ruins, damaged by time and by Cyclone Seroja in 2021. The community stores what few books they have in a cramped staff room. Today, we invite you to help us build not just a library, but a brighter future.
This community-led initiative, supported by Warrane College (UNSW, Sydney), aims to transform education and promote literacy in one of the most remote parts of Timor-Leste.
What We're Building
Your donation will help fund:
- Demolition & Rebuilding of the 40m² school library structure
- New Roof, Walls, Floors, Windows, Doors & Paint
- Furniture (desks, bookshelves, chairs)
- Donation of Books to Promote the Importance of Reading
- Simple Library System to Operate the Library
- Train a Local Librarian to Run the Library
- Rebuilding the Backyard and Basketball Court damaged by the cyclone
No donation is too small. Every bit counts. Every dollar brings us closer to:
- A child learning to read for the first time
- A teacher with tools to teach better
- A generation empowered by literacy
Why This Matters
- Children in Kakavem have no access to a dedicated reading space
- Literacy starts early—but books are rare and expensive
- This library will promote early intellectual development, increase school retention, and build confidence
“Reading should start at home. But in places like Kakavem, there are no books at home. No libraries. This project gives every child a chance to dream and discover through reading.”
— Krispin Fernandes, Local Project Lead
