Please help a friend of mine, Mary. She’s 73, lives alone, and has no heat. I have spent hours on the phone talking to several agencies trying to get her assistance. One agency refers me to another. The Department of Health and Human Services gave me a list of requirements to satisfy: a copy of her deed, proof of paid property taxes, and someone who will work with the DHH that is qualified to install a heating unit. She has an old propane heater that hangs on her wall that is beyond repair. The heating guy says he can get her a replacement unit that fits in that space and venting system, total cost $3500. The DHH said the unit doesn’t meet their standards (they want a higher efficiency rating) so they won’t assist in the cost. Back to square one! Meanwhile, Mary is living under an electric blanket with a polar vortex coming. At this point, I’m just trying to raise the $3500 to get her into heat ASAP.
