Straw For Dogs is an all-volunteer non-profit committed to providing insulated houses and straw for dogs who live outside in Alaska. Many of the dogs we help have old, dilapidated houses that no longer offer protection from the elements, or in some cases, these dogs have no shelter at all. Imagine living outside in the Alaskan winter with nothing at all to shield you from the bitter cold.
Of course, we wish all dogs were able to live inside with their families (at least when they wanted to). However, the reality is that many dogs do not have that option, and they live outside 24/7 in one of the harshest climates on the planet. Until the laws and/or cultural norms change, one thing we can do for now is provide them with double-walled, insulated houses and straw to give them a little comfort during the coldest days.
The mission of Straw For Dogs is a costly one. Each house costs us $375.00, and each bale of straw costs us $25.00. So every bundle we send out is $400.00. The cost to ship these 210-pound house/straw kits to rural Alaskan communities can be even more. So far in 2024, we have sent out 184 houses and 215 bales of straw. We have been blessed to have had many shipping partners who have donated the costs of getting the houses out to the dogs who needed them. So we have been able to stretch our funds to provide more houses rather than put the funds toward the cost of shipping.
The requests for help are constant and we NEVER want to fail to help a dog in need. We need your help to keep our mission going. Please donate anything you can; no amount is too small, every dollar makes a difference.
