Hi - I am raising funds for a local homeless gentleman from North Richland Hills, Texas. Donnie has been on the streets for the last 2 years. He has been switching around sleeping locations as law enforcement and businesses push him out. For the last several months, he has slept on a bench by the Baskin-Robbins at Mid-Cities Road and Rufe Snow. I set Donnie up at a local extended stay hotel as January, and most of February is extremely cold at night.
We have started the process of trying to navigate the social welfare system, and it is overwhelming, complicated, and frustrating. Hoping to get him medical care, dental care, and housing assistance. The Tarrant County website states the Section 8 housing waiting list is closed with an expected 7-year wait. I have started reaching out to all so-called housing assistance programs I can find online.
Donnie previously lived with his sister in North Richland Hills. After she passed away, he was left with no place to live and is only receiving $352 monthly in Social Security. He does not have any children. Imagine being 68 years old, in poor health, and having no money. Donnie does not struggle with alcohol or addiction; he is just old with no resources. I know people end up in these situations due in part to life choices, but that doesn't change the facts of his current situation. I can't turn a blind eye and choose not to care. If you feel compelled to help, your generosity will help me make Donnie's life better.
