Waring Elementary is a Philadelphia neighborhood school just blocks from Masterman, my own public high school. The entire student body falls below the poverty line, and many children come from local homeless shelters. With only 27% of its students proficient in reading and only 8% proficient in math, Waring is among the lowest-performing schools in the district.
The students at Waring Elementary need more academic support. This is exactly what they receive from my classmates (grades 8-12) at Masterman, who have served dozens of Waring students in grades K-4 over the last three years. Our tutors are trained, supervised and dedicated, and as a program, we provide each child with nearly seventy hours of focused instruction each year.
Every Masterman tutor spends three hours per week at Waring. This is an enormous time commitment, especially for busy high schoolers! To make this service opportunity possible, we provide a stipend of $50 at the end of each 12-week term. This is where you come in! Even a dollar will help.
