Support Women At Risk International Foundation (WARIF) in raising $50,000 to educate 6,000 girls through the WARIF Educational School Program (WESP) in six secondary schools across Nigeria

About WARIF

Women At Risk International Foundation (WARIF) is a non-profit organization founded in 2016 by Dr. Kemi Dasilva-Ibru in response to high incidences of rape, sexual violence, and human trafficking of young girls and women in communities across Nigeria. WARIF’s vision is to build a society free of rape and sexual violence. The organization achieves its overarching objective of raising awareness and addressing the prevalence of this problem through a unique holistic “WARIF Approach” which targets three specific pillars – Health, Education, and Community Service.

About the Problem

The prevalence of sexual and gender-based violence in the communities that WARIF serves has resulted in a generation of women and girls with physical and emotional trauma who feel devalued in their communities and are disadvantaged in a number of ways.

Education remains one of the crucial building blocks in equipping girls with the skills and knowledge that they need to become productive members of their community, yet we know that sexual and gender-based violence is a barrier to girls’ education.

Empowered girls become women who improve their socioeconomic status, contribute to their families’ economic well-being and positively impact the overall economy of their society. However, thousands of girls are faced with many barriers in attaining and completing their secondary education in many communities across Nigeria today with violence against women and girls, especially sexual and gender-based violence being one of the leading causes of girls not completing their education.

About the Project

The WARIF Educational School Program (WESP) focused on building and strengthening the capacity of adolescent girls in secondary schools on the appropriate response to and the prevention of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). The girls participating in this program will learn practical ways to protect themselves and advocate for themselves. As part of this program, community members, teachers and parents will also be engaged about ways to prevent and address SGBV.

The project will be implemented over 12 months and will begin with a baseline assessment, stakeholder meetings, and school selection. Following, we will begin training of the 600 girls in the six selected schools. A forum for the parents of the girls will be held in each school to discuss issues of school related gender-based violence, and how parents and community members can play a role in preventing and addressing these issues.

As part of this project, the 600 girls will be encouraged and provided with tolls to share their learnings with 10 of their peers, expanding the reach of the project beyond the 600 girls who are impacted directly
