We are Ward Administration at Harry S Truman Memorial Hospital. We are co-workers of Eric Hecht, we are starting a go fund me to get him a new wheelchair which he is desperately in need of. Here is a little bit of Erics story:

About Eric Hecht

Eric Hetch is a dedicated employee at the Truman VA Hospital and a valued member of the Columbia community. Those who know him admire his determination, his quick wit, and his commitment to showing up every day despite challenges that would stop many others.

What Eric Is Facing

Eric lives with a rare genetic disorder, Friedreich’s Ataxia (www.curefa.org) that is slowly affecting his muscle control. Over time, this condition has made mobility more difficult and physically exhausting. His current wheelchair is over 10 years old, the frame is extremely heavy, the tires frequently pop, and the constant repairs leave him struggling just to get through daily routines and are no longer supporting his needs.

Why He Needs Help

Unfortunately, even though Eric has been working tirelessly with his insurance provider and they have approved some of the parts, they have denied a crucial piece of equipment multiple times. Eric has been working very hard to maintain his independence by keeping a manual wheelchair rather than being forced into a large electric one. An electric chair would make getting to work extremely challenging, as reliable transportation that can accommodate one is limited.

There is a detachable motor available “power assist” a small, supportive device that would help Eric propel his current wheelchair without losing his autonomy. Unfortunately, insurance has denied this crucial equipment multiple times.

The funds raised will go directly toward securing a new, light-weight manual wheelchair and the power assist Eric desperately needs. These tools would dramatically improve his mobility, reduce daily strain, and allow him to continue working, contributing, and living with independence.
