Wanda’s Handicap Renovations
Donation protected
My mother, Wanda, is a double lung transplant recipient who has traded many of life’s luxuries for an opportunity to be a world class “Fama” to her grandchildren and a much needed rock in my life. The transplant was truly one the greatest gifts and blessings our family has ever received. We never lose sight of the fact that every single day is a gift we would not otherwise be afforded.
This gift has come with major medical bills and expenses that have financially paralyzed my mother and step-father. My step-father, Steve, has worked every hour of available overtime for years and as he moves into his mid-sixties, is feeling the consequences of decades of hard labor.
My mother and Steve are unable to afford much beyond necessities as the cost of 18 medications per day along with frequent visits and check-ups hamper their ability to go anywhere or do anything. They accept that these costs are life saving and can’t be adjusted.
In the meanwhile, their home has become a challenge as it does not have many necessities my mother now requires. The current shower and tub are outdated and are difficult for my mother to get in and out of. It has become a safety issue and creates a great bit of anxiety due to the difficulty. My mother needs a more handicapped accessible shower which requires a renovation project they are unable to afford.
The severe winter has damaged their roof and needs a lot of repair. The estimates they’ve received are greater than any amount they can manage. They’ve looked into refinance options and have tried to save money by using skilled labor that is willing to provide more affordable rates but it is still not enough.
We are hoping to raise enough to help my mom and Steve with the costs of installing a handicap accessible shower and ramp which would allow my mother to reach other parts of her home. She loves sitting outside on the porch but is unable to do so because the stairs are so hard on her. These two changes would be life changing both physically and mentally.
Thank you for reading our story and for your consideration.
