What did you wish for when you were 5 years old? New toys, candy, to stay up late…. Well, my nephew Walty wishes he could wake up and not be stiff and in pain.
Walty has psoriatic arthritis. This is a kind of arthritis that results in damage to your joints, swelling, chronic pain and psoriasis. There is no cure so the focus is on limiting the damage and controlling the pain. An infrared sauna would help reduce his pain and increase his mobility. We are raising $2500 to get him one!
Right now Walty receives 2 shots per week and does hand exercises each day to help him keep mobility in his fingers. He suffers from skin lesions that make taking warm baths for pain relief impossible. That is why the sauna is so important. It can provide the heat he needs for relief without agravating the other symptoms. It will also allow him to stay on a lower dose of medicine and reduce the chance of liver damage from his meds.
Here's a little about Walter:
This kid is a fighter and doesn’t let anything stop him. He had open heart surgery at 3 months old! Despite wearing a hearing aid, he loves to sing and blasts out the National Anthem about 10 times a day. He sang it in church and at Memorial Day events this year. He loves music, dancing, being a big brother (he is #3 of 5 siblings) and playing jokes on people. He's fiesty, funny and sweet.
And he deserves to be able to function like a regular kid. He wants to have enough energy to play. He wants to color. He wants to do regular things like button his own pants. So let's raise some money and help him out!
Anything above and beyond the $2500 we are raising for the sauna will go to help with Walty's other school and medical expenses. He has a list of recommended adaptive school supplies and other suggested items, like a specialized mattress, from his occupational therapist. We are working with his school to make his classroom experience adapted to his needs, too, including his hearing loss.
I can't tell you what a difference this will all make for his first year of kindergarten. He'll be able to focus on school instead of his pain and limitations. You're removing huge barriers to his learning!
