Walter's Walk with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML)

After a recent acute myeloid leukemia (AML) diagnosis, we are writing to raise funds for our dear friend Walter Carey (senior) as he begins a daunting battle with blood cancer and fights to navigate the long road to remission.

AML has a complex prognosis and rather dismal survival rate, but recent medical discoveries and new treatments for AML are changing rapidly. These advances bring hope for AML patients like Walter but unfortunately also bring exceptionally high medical bills due to the lack of coverage for new treatments.

We want to ensure Walter has the resources to pursue the best treatment options and the ability to increase his chances of survival without sacrificing his already modest standard of living.

If you are lucky enough to know Walter in his most authentic self, which so many of us are, you know that he is a dedicated father, a loyal friend who will always have your back and a man who generously contributes his help and support to anyone who needs it.

He finds a way to make things possible in every situation, no matter how high the odds may be stacked against him. Walter has a courageous outlook that invites those around him to never give up and push forward in difficult situations or times of unknown.

For as long as we have known Walter, we’ve known he is always on the go. That is because spending time with others is truly how he demonstrates his love and appreciation for them, no matter how inopportune getting to them may be. Despite living in small rural towns for the majority of his life, Walter has always found ways to see those most important to him- whether down the street, in a busy city, tucked away in an off-the-grid village, or across the globe in a foreign country. Along the way, he has built lasting friendships, created fond memories with his family, experienced many challenges, and exemplified to us all how to live to the fullest.

Walter does not fear the road of uncertainty. In fact, he has embraced it throughout his life. However, he does not know a world without his free spirit guiding him. As he undergoes this next chapter throughout his AML treatment, he has no choice but to put his trust into the hands of his medical professionals and faith in God.

With your support, we are working to urgently raise $25,000 for Walter during this difficult time. He and his family will use these funds to explore the best AML treatment options and cover additional medical expenses related to the care of Walter. The sooner we can meet our goal, the better Walter’s chances are of qualifying for the best AML treatments.

We know that the last year has been trying for everyone. Between hyperinflation, an unsteady market and a quickly approaching holiday season, it may not be feasible to contribute monetary funds at this time.
