This is the story of faith, courage, and the incredible goodness of God.
On March 15th, Walter Deleon's wife Kathy found him unresponsive and not breathing. Her friends happened to arrive at the same time. One was a registered nurse, and the other a first responder. However, rather than do CPR as they had been trained, there first thought was to pray for Walter. By all accounts, Walter was dead, but the goodness of God sent him back responsive and breathing through their prayers.
When the ambulance arrived the paramedics worked diligently to get Walter stable enough to get to the local hospital where they assessed that he was having a heart attack. Over the next 8 weeks, Walter and his family's faith was put to the test through the overwhelming odds against him.
The first obstacle Walter had to overcome was to get his kidneys functioning to even have open heart surgery. By the grace of God, his circumstances improved enough for him to have the surgery. After a 10 hour surgery that should have only taken 4, the doctors had to open him back up to find and stop the bleeding. God showed his grace again by allowing the doctors to find the pinholes bleeding out. The next hurdle was to get Walter off the respirator which should have only taken a few days. After 2 weeks, Walter through incredible courage came off the respirator. Walter's blood pressure then became unstable. Again the Lord showed his mercy and grace. By now, Walter was in such a weakened state and hallucinating. The circumstances appeared bleak for his full recovery. But God being God can do anything. Walter's mind and strength were renewed. Phil 4:13 I can do all things through Him who strengthens me. Now Walter needed to get out of bed so that he could get physical therapy or else he would have to go to a nursing home. With determination he was able to get up enough for the therapist to work with him. On the first day of therapy, they dropped him. Anybody else would have given up but Walter kept on persevering, day by day until finally on May 10th, he will be released from the hospital. There is so much more to this story about the miracles that God performed for Walter, but this shortened version is enough for you to get the idea of God's love and mercy.
Last year, at the age of 76, Walter decided to give up a career as an electrical engineer and pursue a career with USHA as an insurance agent. He was tired of being on the road traveling with his job. He could now stay home and serve where he and his wife pastor at River Riders Covenant Church. But that dream was cut short for the time being with his illness. He is looking forward to the day he is strong enough to get back to work with USHA and his church.
This experience has allowed Walter and Kathy to witness to others about the miracles and strength that God has given them. Psalm 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Let us be a very present help in times of trouble!
