Hello, my name is Chris. My husband Brent and I, along with many others, are fundraising for our friends Wally and Jennifer. Wally is one of my husband's oldest friends. We all went to elementary, junior high and high school together. In addition, Wally and I discovered, in our 30's, that we are shirt-tail relations and that our grandparents lived next door to each other in the Detroit area years ago.
Wally and Jennifer need help with medical bills, travel and daily living expenses and any further expenses stemming from his disease.
Unfortunately, this June, Wally was out of state working and came down with pneumonia. He wasn't getting any better, so the next week he returned to the ER and they determined that he had a tumor in his throat. He was diagnosed with terminal Squamous Cell Carcinoma.
Wally returned to MI mid June, was home for four days and then had to be admitted to the hospital due to his high white blood cell count. He was eventually transferred from the hospital in Midland to a hospital in Detroit. His total hospital stay ran thru mid-July. During that time, he was fitted with a feeding tube and told that he wouldn't be able to eat and drink for the remainder of his life. Jennifer, Wally's wife, commuted daily to be home at night with the dogs and her daughter, Wally's stepdaughter, Kylie.
Wally finally was able to come home!! We prepped their house in anticipation of Wally's return. Deep cleaned all the rooms, received a donated recliner for Wally to sit in, and swapped out some other furniture. Wally and Jennifer were ecstatic.
Wally had spent all of this time in the hospital without discussing the cancer with an oncologist. After a week of getting settled in at home, Wally and Jennifer finally were going to see the oncologist. The news they received wasn't promising. 2 months life expectancy without treatment, up to a year with treatment. A huge blow.
If you know Wally, he's a fighter. That was the plan...to fight. Get treatment and enjoy a few additional months with his family, dogs, and cat.
Wally's body didn't agree with his plan. After his short stay at home of 2 weeks, Wally started to get short of breath; his pulse ox was tanking into the 60s, and his visiting nurse highly suggested he go to the hospital. Wally finally relented and was admitted to the hospital. He is now on a ventilator and has been told that he is past the treatment window. The cancer is now in his lungs. It's just a matter of time before our dear friend will be gone.
We are having a benefit for Wally and Jennifer on August 14 at the Sanford Eagles. Spaghetti Dinner, a pool tournament, bake sale and silent auction. Multiple people, no longer living in Midland, have asked for a way to contribute. I've started this GoFundMe page to make that possible.
Wally and Jennifer appreciate your support!
