Walking With Elizabeth (Liz) Toward Healing

Haawka, Hello, Community,

My name is Juan, and I am writing on behalf of my sister, Elizabeth, and her son, Huumaay, who were involved in a serious car accident on Thursday evening around 5:15 PM.

Elizabeth (Liz) and Huumaay were driving home from our mom’s when they were struck head-on by a speeding driver who did not have her headlights on. The impact was severe, spinning their car several times in the opposite direction. Liz is now facing a long and painful road to recovery from her injuries. We give deep thanks to Creator that Liz and Huumaay are still with us—protected and held through what could have been a devastating loss.

Earlier that day, Liz had been on the Soboba Reservation, walking in service to community. She spent the day offering sound therapy and healing to Tribal TANF workers—holding space, praying, and sharing her gifts to help others release and restore. This is who she is at her core: a mother, a healer, and a woman who lives in service to the people.

After finishing her work, Liz returned home, picked up my nephew from our mom’s house, and within three minutes of leaving, the accident occurred. The timing still feels surreal—how quickly life can shift in an instant.

Because of her injuries, Liz is unable to work for some time. She is now being cared for by our mom, as she’s barely able to get around. For someone who gives so much of herself to others, this forced pause has brought both physical and emotional challenges, along with financial hardship. Right now, her medicine is rest, recovery, and the care that her community can surround her with.

We are humbly asking our community, relatives, and allies to come together in support of her during this time of healing. Your contributions will make a meaningful difference by helping cover:

  • Ongoing healing needs — including medical care, therapy, traditional or cultural healing practices, and wellness support.
  • Time to rest and recover — ensuring she can focus fully on her health without the stress of needing to return to work too soon.
  • Essential living expenses — such as rent, groceries, utilities, and transportation while she is unable to earn her regular income.
  • Support for her children and family — helping with childcare, school supplies, meals, and other daily needs while they walk this healing journey together.

Every contribution, no matter the amount, helps ease this transition and reminds her that she is held in community care.
In our way, we believe healing is not meant to be carried alone. When one of us is hurt, we lift them together.

If you are able to give, thank you. If not, your prayers, good thoughts, and sharing this story are also medicine.

We ask Creator to watch over Elizabeth and Huumaay, to guide their healing, and to return balance to their bodies, hearts, and spirits.

With gratitude and respect,

Juan & Family
