On January 21st my mother spent her birthday in a hospital fighting what we thought was just a normal pneumonia infection. Little did we know that it would snow ball into something more serious. Through that pneumonia diagnosis we also found out my mother was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung Adenocarcinoma. That diagnosis rocked our family but not her, she was strong, confident and even told everyone to stop the crying and being so dramatic. My mother is a pillar and icon to our family and we were going to stand in faith with her as she was doing also.
She was then discharged on January 30th from the hospital.
January 31st my mother suffers a major stroke that left her left side debilitated, yet she was still determined to keep fighting. Making jokes with everyone around her and still smiling as much as she could.
February 1st my mother suffers a 100% blockage in her main artery from a dislodged clot from her DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) causing a heart attack and required emergency catheterization in order to allow her heart to continue to beat. She lasts about 15 minutes in her catheterization, comes out with a smile, and looks at me and says "Tu eres lo mas lindo que tiene mami". I then laugh, hold her hand and say "Y tu eres lo mas fuerte que tengo yo". She then is sent up to ICU to recover from all her acute events where we continue to pray that the Lord gives her every ounce of strength in this moment to keep fighting.
February 3rd my mother, who is now on heprin because they needed to make sure her new catheterization is functioning well, she then suffers another stroke; this time a hemorrhagic stroke causing a brain bleed. We were distraught and began to think this is it. Not my mother. She is still fighting.
February 4th-14th my mother is not just stable, she is improving. Many of her care team members were consistently reminding me that she "is really lucky to even be breathing on her own." God gave my mother the strength to not only breath on her own, but to eat, to move, to speak, to SING! February 14th my mother gets discharged from the Hospital and begins her journey to rehab where many providers thought she wouldn't make it to. With limitations of course but she is still fighting.
February 14th-17th my mother begins her rehab assignment and starts moving with physical therapy and continuing to eat, me and her are singing on the phone, her family is there at bedside feeding, washing, caring, laughing, encouraging her as she did so many times for us and we start to think "even though she is going through it, she is still fighting! So we keep fighting with her!
February 18th at night my mother stops eating. She stops speaking. Her brothers are calling me to tell me that she doesn't look to good and that she maybe she is having an off day.
February 19th-26th she is still not eating and speaking so we become concerned. They draw labs and are waiting back for ekg's, xray's, and other imaging. The xray's result and they find fluid in her lungs and her breathing is becoming increasingly more labored. They give her treatment for the fluids. EKG comes back normal and her labs come back normal with a slight elevation in her White blood cells. Her cancer. She is rushed for an emergancy CT and we find that her hemorrhagic stroke had gotten worse and she has so much blood and pressure in her brain that it shifted her brain off center. She can't speak, eat, or track us anymore. We decide to transition more to comfort measures and hospice care.
Today, my mother has not passed away but she is closer to meeting her Father in Heaven. As a family we are beginning this go fund me in order to raise funds to be able to honor her the way she would have loved to be honored. I pray to the Lord that I never have to touch a cent of this money and my mother gets to go back home and play music with me and her family and enjoy everything she has worked so hard for. However, the desire to honor someone who has sacrificed her entire life for others is greater than anything else. Any donation big or small would help, but if you cannot spare financially please pray steadfastly for her to be comforted and embraced by her savior as that will mean just as much if not more.
