My name is Eddie Bond and my dream is to walk across Africa, from Cape Town to Cairo.
A few years ago someone sent me a meme about the theoretical longest walk in the world, which no one has completed. I laughed it off as impossible, but then I started to imagine what it would be like to walk across Africa, and how amazing a journey like that would be. I’ve been dreaming of walking across Africa ever since.
I have already begun the walk!
I started officially on September 7th in Cape Town, South Africa at the V&A Waterfront. So far it has taken 28 days to reach the town of Oudtshoorn, South Africa. I have already walked 693km (415 miles) as I write this.
The destination is not important, the purpose is just to have a journey and to experience and participate along the way. I will face many challenges but I will also learn many lessons and grow in unexpected ways.
I am excited to meet the people, experience the cultures, hear the languages, walk the miles, and taste the foods of Africa! I am so grateful that I get to be on this journey, everyday brings new adventures!
My intention is to walk roughly straight through Africa, following the old Cape to Cairo railway route (it was never fully completed).
I will make my route along the safest possible roads. I am open to necessary detours, route changes, and changes of plans. Safety first. Sometimes I will have to travel far out of my way to avoid walking through dangerous areas.
In 2011 I walked across America with two friends. That took 8 months to cover roughly 5,000km (3,000 miles). I would estimate that to walk across Africa could take 2-3 years to complete.
I am here now, in South Africa, looking at my maps and planning my next few days, excited and nervous for the challenges ahead.
Thank you so much for your support, for being a part of this incredible voyage. I am thrilled that I am getting to live this dream each day!
Thank you!
Mahalo!
Baie Dankie!
