Dog Walk to Support Autism Unit at Risca Comprehensive
A community dog walk is being organised to raise awareness and funds for the ASC Centre at Risca Comprehensive School. “Walkies for Autism” is a two-mile walk through Cwmcarn Forest, bringing people together to celebrate and support young people with autism.

The event will take place at 10am on Sunday 26 April, starting from the Cwmcarn Forest car park. The walk is expected to take around 45 minutes. Afterwards, participants are invited to relax with a hot drink and a snack at the Raven Café.

The school’s ASC Centre supports students aged 11 to 16 within a mainstream setting. Pupils are guided by key workers to attend lessons while also spending time in the centre to develop essential academic, social, and life skills. These skills help prepare them for independence and life beyond school.

Funds raised from previous events have made a meaningful impact. They have supported projects such as the development of a garden space, where students work alongside peers in the ALN department to build independence, organisation, and confidence through practical, hands-on activities. These real-life experiences play a vital role in boosting self-esteem and preparing students for the future.

Donations have also helped provide tools and resources for the centre’s allotment and sensory garden, encouraging students to learn how to live independently and collaborate with others.

Deb Howells, the teacher responsible for the ASC Centre, said:

“Last year, our project used the funding to further develop the allotment, allowing us to grow more vegetables. We even made chutneys and jams from what we harvested. Funds raised this year will help us to focus on improving our wellbeing area for Emotional Literacy Support Area (ELSA).”

Headteacher Martin Hulland added:

“I’m delighted to see this event return to the school calendar for 2026. It is always very well attended, and I’m sure this year will be no exception. My thanks go to the organisers and everyone who takes part.”
