Walking for Alex – Supporting Help A Squaddie
On 9 October, what would have been Alex’s birthday, I’ll be walking from Molineux Stadium to Cannock Chase in memory of my brother-in-law, Alex.
This walk is about far more than miles.
It’s about remembering a man who meant so much to so many people. A brother, son, partner, friend, veteran and somebody who, like so many men, fought battles that weren’t always visible to the people around him.
I’ll be wearing a Wolves shirt with Alex 92–26 on the back and carrying his memory with me every step of the way.
I’ve chosen to raise money for Help A Squaddie because this charity has a genuine connection to Alex’s life.
Years ago, when Alex needed support, Help A Squaddie were there for him. They helped him secure a flat, supported him with furniture and provided the kind of practical help that can make an enormous difference when somebody is struggling.
They’re a relatively small charity doing incredibly important work for veterans and their families, and this feels like our opportunity to give something back.
The support for this walk already has been unbelievable.
People have offered shirts, support vehicles, their time, donations and even just words of encouragement. At a time when it would be very easy to lose faith in people, the kindness shown by complete strangers has genuinely restored some of mine.
Every donation, regardless of the amount, will go directly towards helping Help A Squaddie continue supporting veterans who need someone in their corner.
But this walk also has another purpose.
It is about talking.
Talking about men’s mental health. Talking about veterans. Talking about the battles people can carry silently while appearing completely fine to everyone around them.
Through Battle Within, I want Alex’s memory to help encourage other men to speak before things become too heavy.
If one person sees this walk, reaches out to a mate and says, “You alright?” — properly asks them — then Alex’s name is already making a difference.
If you can donate, thank you.
If you can share the fundraiser, thank you.
If you want to join us for part of the walk, you’ll be more than welcome.
And if you’re struggling yourself, please remember that speaking does not make you weak.
Sometimes asking for help is the strongest thing you can do.
For Alex.
92–26.
Keep on drumming. ❤️
