Following a seven month period of feeling unwell with constant vomiting, headaches and lethargy, my 12 year old niece Jasmine was taken seriously ill 4 weeks ago when she suffered two seizures which consequently caused her to stop breathing. She was intubated and ventilated and a CT scan showed severe hydrocephalus due to a brain tumour. She was transferred to Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool that evening where she endured emergency life saving surgery to drain the fluid from her brain. A biopsy and MRI shown that Jasmine has a craniopharyngioma. This is a benign congenital tumour that affects the endocrine system.
Yesterday (10/12/15), Jasmine had more surgery to reomve several other cysts surrounding the tumour (which cause hydrocephalus), but the tumour itself could not be removed safely with surgery. My sister has found out today that the next course of treatment will involve flying to America next month where Jasmine will have proton beam therapy for 6-8 weeks. Proton beam threapy is a more precise way of erradicating diseased tissue whilst virtually leaving surrounding areas untocuhed. It is not currently available here in the UK.
Our wonderful NHS will fund for the cost of this treatment as well as return flights and accommodation for Katie and Jasmine whilst in the states. However, day to day living costs will not be funded. As a family we will be putting our money together to fund this but with such a short space of time to go we ask graciously for the help of our friends and any monetary donation that you can please spare. We understand that christmas is around the corner and money may be tight but it doesn't matter how small the donation, every penny will be gratefully recieved by all of us.
To pay it forward if you will, we as a family have vowed to fundraise ourselves in the future (once Jasmine is better), so that others who find themsleves in this situation may benefit from the same compassion and generosity. I don't know about the rest of the family but I have already said that I will do a skydive to raise funds... You heard it here first! I MUST BE MAD!
