On December 14th, 2023 while most of us were busy preparing for the holidays, the Choueiri family received devastating news - with no symptoms whatsoever, Wadih found out he had stage 4 colon cancer with metastasis to his liver. Their hearts were crushed and their lives were completely turned upside down.
In true Wadih fashion, he chose to take on the battle with fierce optimism and faith to fight for the beautiful life he shares with his wife Andrea (our colleague at BI Milton Hospital), their young daughter Nadia and their big Lebanese and Colombian family.
In Jan 2024 Wadih began his care at Dana-Farber and went through multiple months of chemotherapy, two major open abdominal surgeries and then more chemotherapy. Just when everyone thought they had this thing beat, the Choueiri family faced more gut-wrenching news in the fall of 2024 - the aggressive cancer was already back in Wadih’s liver, and his team feared that there were limited options.
Wadih kept his faith and kept fighting. He was referred to the Transplant Team at BIDMC and after extensive testing, they determined he was a candidate for a liver transplant - a newer treatment option for a lucky subset of metastatic colon cancer patients. They were very excited and went on to start the search for a living donor. His younger brother, Anthony Choueiri, underwent an extensive medical workup and he turned out to be an ideal match! Anthony did not hesitate for a second and he bravely and proudly committed to saving his brother’s life.
On May 13, 2025 - after a combined 21 hours of surgery performed by 7 attending transplant surgeons and multiple surgical teams, Wadih received the gift of life from his brother Anthony with a fresh new liver - both surgeries were a success! As planned, they both spent a brief amount of time in the ICU, then went on to the transplant floor. Anthony is making a smooth recovery at home and is getting stronger each week. Wadih has had some stressful bumps in his recovery; needing additional procedures, and a readmission to the hospital. Fortunately, he is home with his family now.
Wadih has been fighting this arduous battle for almost 18 months now - always full of so much positivity and determination. Both he and Andrea have worked full-time through most of the steps in his treatment and have tried their best to keep a normal lifestyle for their young daughter despite the challenges. As Andrea’s colleagues, we’ve seen their hardship firsthand. With their permission, we have set up this GoFundMe to share their story and encourage the community to help provide some financial relief for everything they’ve already gone through, and the continued battle ahead. Donations will help cover lost wages, high insurance deductibles, expensive prescription medications, and unexpected daily living costs.
Please consider donating or sharing this campaign to help ease their financial stress and allow them to focus on what matters most: healing and being together. Any amount helps, and if you are not able to contribute please send over prayers, good thoughts, strength, and positivity!
