Thursday June 4th was a typical routine start to the day for The Shockman family. Matt, Jerrin, and Carson were at work, Alivia and Luke each at friends house. While at work, Jerrin received an unfortunate call from family that their home was on fire. A selfless stranger saw it and stopped by their neighbors house. They called 911. The neighbors went to their home as they have 3 dogs. By Gods grace, all 3 dogs were rescued in time and survived. Matt, Jerrin, Carson, Alivia, and Luke are all alive with just the clothes they wore that summer day on their backs. The house due to its age of 110 years old was considered a total loss. Their beautiful century farm home cannot be rebuilt resulting in a total new home rebuild. Their belongings also considered a total loss.
Insurance covers some cost, but a lot will unfortunately be out of pocket. One of the major costs is demolition. Each fire case is unique in how insurance works. For instance their insurance will pay a portion of the demolition. Demolition cost covered by insurance will pay only $12,000 but the estimated demolition cost is $30,000. This does not cover the additional cost of demolition to meet safety and hazard codes. For instance, due to the original basement being present, it must be completely filled in. There are fill costs, extra dumpster cost, scrap cost, hazardous waste cost, and the list goes on. These costs are not able to be included and rolled into their new construction mortgage.
The Shockmans have been able to temporarily live in their pole barn on the property. This way they can care for their chickens, dogs, and kittens on their property and not have to re-home their pets while renting. Their pets mean the world to them and are family as well. To make their pole barn livable, they had to get running water and electricity running as it was connected to the house originally. To shower and do dishes they also had to get a bigger hot water heater. Until these were completed, they had to shower at friends and families homes in the mean time. Due to the extreme heat this summer, multiple floor air conditioners had to be purchased to keep them and their pets comfortable. Appliances had to be purchased to cook and feed their family. Until electricity and water were running, they had additional cost of eating out every meal, gas to go places to get food, shower, do laundry that they normally wouldn't accrue. Today they got word that demolition will begin Monday. This means that even more of their out of pocket portion will be emerge fast.
The Shockmans are a kind, loving, wonderful local family who have and would give the shirts off their backs again to help others. They have done it before and will continue to give many more times in their lifetime. Lets lift them up in prayer for a fast but safe rebuild without major hiccups. Please join us in supporting the Shockmans by considering a donation. Thank you!
