WAALY and MIS Fundraiser for Guatemalan Children

Tax deductible
Dear Boarding Community and followers of @we_are_almost_like_you,

We were extremely fortunate to study in some of the most exclusive schools in the world. However, as we are sure most of you are conscious, many kids don't even have the chance to be educated. Guatemala has one of the lowest literacy rates in the Western Hemisphere. The country suffers from serious poverty and social issues. Although officially education is free to all, the costs of books, school supplies, transportation, uniform and food mean that many families cannot afford to send their children to school.

Education For The Children (EFTC) is an NGO working to break the cycle of poverty in Jocotenango, Guatemala, through education and empowerment. EFTC have created a School for Hope, which currently supports more than 679 children from Kindergarten all the way to University, in pursuit of their dreams. Many of their students are first generation learners; working hard to lift their families out of the cycle of poverty. Without EFTC, the students would most likely be working, like 20% of children in Guatemala.

We have already helped EFTC in 2019 and this time around they need our help more than ever. The school has been closed for in person learning for more than a year now due to the COVID-19 pandemic. EFTC have been providing food hampers each month for the families of the students. The students don't have access to technology nor internet, and the majority of their parents have a very low education level with several never having learned to read nor write. There is currently a lot of pressure for students of all ages to drop out of school and go to work, if we can keep them connected virtually there is a larger chance that we will be able to retain them in the school. This is how we can help:

$10 - 2 weeks of internet for 1 student
$25 - 2 months of food baskets
$50 - School supplies for 1 student
$125 - A tablet so a student can learn remotely
$200 - Textbooks for students to learn while at home
$500 - Internet for an entire class of students for 1 month
$1,000 - A month's supply of life saving medication for a student in need
$3,500 - A class set of tablets
$5,000 - Rent, food, diapers, and other urgent supplies for our high risk families and students
$12,000 - Tablets for 2 whole grades - 100 students so they can learn remotely

Together with Montreux International School, we are organising another competition! This time we will discover "The Most Generous Boarding School of 2021". The school whose students donate the most money in total wins. All you need to do is to mention which school you go to or went to in the comment section during the donation process. Remember - every dollar counts!

Let's do this together, Boarders!
