ATTENTION ALL CHEUGY FREAKS! Yeah, I’m talking to YOU! Vincenzo Nappi is gearing up to make their debut feature film, HUMAN ERROR, and they need your help!
THE MOVIE:
Ripping out and eating a few pages from the books of Matt Johnson’s NIRVANNA THE BAND THE SHOW, Jane Schoenbrun’s WE’RE ALL GOING TO THE WORLD’S FAIR, Ronald Bronstein’s FROWNLAND, Grace Glowicki’s TITO, and Bayley Sweitzer & Adam Khalil’s EMPTY METAL, HUMAN ERROR is an absurdist dark comedy thriller that follows Noah (Matisse ApSimon-Megens, MESSY LEGENDS), an infamous internet troll, who at the behest of their idol Jimmy Beast, sets off on a mission to unalive the politician who banned the social media app in which they derive all of their self-worth and identity.
Executive produced by Maxwell Nalevansky and Carl Fry, the directors of the cult hit RATS!, HUMAN ERROR is poised to be a fun, dark, and absolutely bonkers film as it uses genre as a means to dive deep into themes of isolation through overconsumption, gender identity, political propaganda, my love for the city of Montreal, and what it feels like to turn 30 at what seems to be the end of civilized society.
Before moving on, it is important to note that no matter how high the donation counter goes, this film WILL be made! It is a passion project that I have already poured years of effort into, and have already started filming. Coming from an extreme DIY background, I have learned to stretch nonexistent budgets and become incredibly resourceful as a filmmaker. That is why I have designed this film to work within varying budgets.
THE NEEDS:
HOWEVER, to make this film the best it can be, and the closest to its intended vision, we need YOUR help! We’ll need this money for actors, feeding our crew, heavy VFX and animation, music licensing, GoPros out the wazoo, small built sets, studio spaces, costumes, rugs, 3D printed slop, and much more.
THE CORE CREW:
Writer, director, co-cinematographer, co-producer, VINCENZO NAPPI (OH… CANADA, FIRST BITE)
Vincenzo Nappi is a curator and award-winning filmmaker from Montreal, Quebec. They hold a BFA in Film Studies, are a programmer at the Fantasia International Film Festival, and are the founder of the screening series Enter The Videodrome. His film work focuses on Canadian identity, the effects of the internet, and the nefarious nature of propaganda. Both as a director and cinematographer, their work has screened at festivals like the Fantasia International Film Festival, Festival Regard, and SXSW Sydney.
Star, and co-producer MATISSE APSIMON-MEGENS (MESSY LEGENDS, IN LIEU OF FLOWERS)
Matisse ApSimon-Megens is an actor, filmmaker, and rugmaker living in Montreal, Quebec. They love to make things, especially with friends, because collaboration is the best! Most recently, they’ve acted in short films In Lieu of Flowers (Fantasia International Film Festival, Calgary International Film Festival), Messy Legends (Fantasia International Film Festival), and Bloomfield (Webseries she makes with her roommates). Matisse also makes big cool rugs.
Noah started off as a Bionicle Lego-tuber, but has since fallen down the rabbit hole of IRL streaming and getting rage-baited in public after a falling out with a Lego employee left them alienated. Selfish and chronically constipated due to their energy drink addiction, Noah clings to their relationship with popular streamer Jimmy Beast, as their real friendships fall apart. Think Keith from FROWNLAND, mixed with Kurt from SPREE, Tito from… TITO, and Matt from NIRVANNA THE BAND THE SHOW. Don’t ask them when the last time they were able to go to the bathroom was, because they’re going through it right now! BE EMPATHETIC ABOUT THEIR BATHROOM ISSUES! GOD!
Executive Producers, MAXWELL NALEVANSKY & CARL FRY (RATS!, I KILLED OSAMA!?)
Maxwell Nalevansky and Carl Fry are long-time collaborators and best friends, hailing from New York and Austin, respectively. Maxwell and Carl fell in love with each other's creative voices on the set of the cult classic film Lingua Franca and have since been inseparable. Uniting Carl's background in VFX and dark humor with Maxwell's strong background in production design and offbeat filmmaking style, they made their feature film debut as Co-Directors: the uncompromising and unhinged RATS!
Co-producer, JUAN OSPINA (FIRST BITE)
Juan Ospina is a Colombian writer and filmmaker based in Montreal, QC. He graduated with a BFA in Film Studies from Concordia University. Since he arrived in Montreal, Juan has focused his interests on films and representation of immigrants and diasporic communities, their journeys and their memories, particularly within the Latino.a.e diaspora.
Associate Producer, BECCA MCKAY (STEAL MY LIFE)
Becca McKay is the Programming Manager of Fantasia, a multidisciplinary artist, a film producer, and the co-creator of Pony Pit. She is based in Montreal and works directly with the Quebec, Canadian, and International genre film industry, where she has produced many projects, including a micro-cinema, film and art festivals, and curated shows. Her personal work revolves around reviving dilapidating physical media.
Co-cinematographer, CHICO PERES SMITH (MESSY LEGNDS, DEAD DICKS)
Chico Peres Smith is a Luso-Canadian filmmaker and freelance film critic navigating life between Montreal and Lisbon. He covers film festivals as part of the CULT MTL team and, when in Montreal, hosts monthly independent filmmakers events and teaches cinema whenever and wherever the opportunity arises.
Editor, MARIE-MICHÈLE WAYLAND
Marie-Michèle Wayland is a documentary filmmaker and an editor. She loves to walk the line between fiction and reality in editing and to make her edits felt by the audience. She’s worked on Vincenzo Nappi’s Oh… Canada as an assistant editor and producer, and she’s thrilled to work on this messy, exciting film.
Associate producer, Sound Designer, LORENZO GUTIÉRREZ (N.U.N.S. WITH NUNCHUCKS)
Lorenzo "Eightball" Gutiérrez is a Canadian filmmaker. His work focuses on world-building within the genres of science-fiction and exploitation; influenced by Japanese & Soviet cinema.
Music Supervisor, ALEX APOSTOLIDIS (HELLO, MY NAME IS BEAVER)
Alex Apostolidis is an image-based artist, musician, and cultural worker based in Tiohtià:ke/Mooniyang (Montreal, Quebec) since 2016. They are interested in theatrics, DIY, deviance, and communal experiences. Their most recent projects are made with iWant2BeOnTV, a collective that explores the intersection of broadcast media, theater, and musical performance while challenging how the capitalist agenda profits from cultural hegemony.
THE CORE CAST:
Actor playing Mason, MASON PERSAUD (MESSY LEGENDS)
Mason Persaud is a comedian in Montreal. His film credits include Messy Legends (2025) and My Name is Beaver (2025). He has been seen at the Just For Laughs Festival, Montreal Fringe, and the Montreal Sketch Comedy Festival. Where at the latter he has received Best Newcomer (2022), and Best Locale Troupe (2023, 2025). He hopes he makes you proud.
Mason is a rug-making nepobaby who is starting to regret allowing their oldest friend, Noah, to squat on their couch. Although Mason would love to return to the friendship they had back in school, Noah’s online infamy becomes a stain on their relationship. Mason is probably the most normal person in the entire film, which is not saying much.
Actor playing James, JAMES WATTS (MESSY LEGENDS, DEATH TRIP)
James Watts is the co-writer/co-director and one of the stars of the Montreal cult hit MESSY LEGENDS. He is also the director and co-writer of the canuck horror film, DEATH TRIP. An actor, director, musician, comedian, staple of the local indie film scene, and LEGEND! (Vince wrote this. It’s not James congratulating himself. I MEAN IT!)
James runs an illegal 3D printing business in the basement of the computer shop he works at. He is the human manifestation of millennial Hot Topic discount bin cringe humour. We don’t have Hot Topic here, but I imagine that is what it would feel like. Think like an uncomfortable mix of Dallas from RELAXER and Derek from BUZZARD & VULCANIZADORA, or like a South Park Funko Pop of a man for the non-Joel Potrykus-pilled people out there. Go watch RELAXER! Wait, no. Keep reading and then go watch it!
Actor playing Kk, KYRSTYN KUMOR (STEAL MY LIFE)
Kyrstyn Kumor (also known as kk) is a theatre director, filmmaker, writer, actress, dancer, singer, composer, cellist, popstar, photographer, and a multidisciplinary installation artist currently working in Montreal, Québec.
Kk is the second in line to the Party Palace throne, an artspace focused on human creation in a stance against the use of generative AI, and a minion to the queen it girl, and owner of the Party Palace. Her art form consists of 3D printing sculptures, and she’s super insecure about it, so DON’T ASK! Nothing will get in the way of what she wants, and no insult shall go unpunished.
Actor playing Annie, ANNIE WREN (STEAL MY LIFE, WHEEK FLESH)
Annie is a filmmaker, actress, and musician based in Montreal.
Annie is third in line to the Party Palace throne, but she’s just in it for the chaos of having power over others. As a minion to Kk, she is looking for any excuse to test out her new taser, so DON’T ASK! I TOLD YOU ALREADY! COME ON! Annie is like if a hyena were a person, but was solely socialized on Harmony Korine’s GUMMO.
More cast announcements to come…
THE AESTHETIC:
Visually, this film will build upon my cinematography work in the Annie Wren-directed STEAL MY LIFE and upcoming PERVERTS, where I utilized a lot of non-traditional cinematography techniques. HUMAN ERROR will be using camcorders, GoPros, PS2 EyeToys, phones, security cameras, 3D printer cameras (not a joke), ear-cleaning cameras (still not a joke), and a 360-degree camera, as I attempt to make a film that is as overstimulating as the algorithm-driven internet feels. I make movies because I am interested in experimenting with form, and I intend to push that as far as I ever have with this project.
THE LONG LIST OF INFLUENCES:
Listen, I watch a lot of movies. You could almost say it’s my job… So, I’m pulling from many influences to bring HUMAN ERROR to life! I’m a big believer in citing your sources, so I leave you with my long list of influences.
Grace Glowicki’s TITO, Matt Johnson’s NIRVANNA THE BAND THE SHOW and THE DIRTIES, Joel Potrykus’ BUZZARD, Ronald Bronstein’s FROWNLAND, Daniel Goldhaber’s HOW TO BLOW UP A PIPELINE, Louise Weard’s CASTRATION MOVIE, Bayley Sweitzer and Adam Khalil’s EMPTY METAL, Shinji Higuchi’s SHIN ULTRAMAN, Hideaki Anno’s LOVE & POP, Jane Schoenbrun’s WE’RE ALL GOING TO THE WORLD’S FAIR, Terry Chiu’s OPEN DOOM CRESCENDO, Maxwell Nalevansky and Carl Fry’s RATS!, Knox and Matt Eastman’s THE YEAR OF STARING AT NOSES, Conner O’Malley’s THE MASK and COREYS, Eugene Kotlyarenko’s SPREE, Harmony Korine’s BABY INVASION, Kelly Hurcomb and James Watts’ MESSY LEGENDS, Ethan Eng’s THERAPY DOGS, Victoria Vincent’s LIFEWASTERS and SNOOZE QUEST, Harrison Fishman’s MOON HOAX, Fabian Velasco and Milos Mitrovic’s SERVE THE COUNTRY, Maziyar Khatam’s THE SWEATER, and Frank Dunsten, Ben Roberts, and Oliver Roberts’ SPIDERS WEB.
