We (Khemi, Leigh, and Simon) have created this page on behalf of our dear friend Ecson Caimite, who has just been granted parole after being incarcerated for over 20 years in New York State. While we are elated at his imminent release, the unfortunate reality is that Ecson will not be able to remain in the US and will instead be released into ICE custody and deported to Haiti. This is due to the fact that Ecson’s family immigrated to the US from Haiti when he was a child and he was not able to gain citizenship before his incarceration.
As many of you may know, we came to know Ecson as volunteers for the Parole Preparation Project where we worked with Ecson over the course of several years to prepare for his meetings with the Parole Board. It is through those efforts that we’ve had the opportunity to form a strong bond and friendship with Ecson and to see firsthand how caring, appreciative, funny, and endlessly creative he is, despite all the challenges that he has experienced throughout his lifetime.
We ask for your help in raising funds to help ease what will likely be a challenging transition for Ecson, who is not only starting over after spending nearly half his life in the prison system, but is also forced to make that transition in a country where he hasn’t been since he was a child and has a very limited network of family and friends available for support.
Thank you in advance for your contributions towards providing a more dignified transition for Ecson. 100% of your contributions will go directly to Ecson to support him with housing, transport, food, and any other essentials he needs to get himself set up in Haiti.
