Summer Intensive with AXIS Dance CO

Donation protected
For those of you who do not know me, my name is Jen GaNun and I am so excited to have been invited to the AXIS Dance Company Summer Intensive this August in Oakland, CA.  With your help, I can take advantage of this awesome oppurtunity.

A little about AXIS Dance Compnay:
AXIS Dance Company is one of the world’s leading and most innovative ensembles of dancers with and without disabilities. Paving the way for physically integrated dance, AXIS transforms perceptions of dance and disability. Based in Oakland, CA, AXIS shares its cutting edge artistic and education/outreach work with thousands annually all over the world.

AXIS exists to change the face of dance and disability. They accomplish this by a) creating and performing contemporary dance that is developed through the collaboration of dancers with and without disabilities, b) teaching dance and educating about collaboration and disability through community education and outreach programs, and c) supporting physically integrated dance locally, nationally, and internationally.

A little about me: I started to explore integrated dance while in school for Rehabilitation and Disabilities Studies and Dance.  After graduation and Americorps NCCC, I decided on Denver as a place to live and dance. I have danced with companies in Denver such as Avatar Movement, Highlands Dance Company, AFI, Parallax Performing Arts and Cleo Parker Robinson Company 2. After a career changing injury I started to focus more on what was important to me in dance and wanted to be a part of creating a  space for musicians and dancers of all abilities to work together. Out of this idea,Tigress Dance was formed and I am still co-directing Tigress today. I am also involved with multiple integrated companies including Magic Moments, acting as their co-coordinator for their "special needs" program and as a choreographer for their yearly theatre productions.

My teaching experience includes working with folks of all abilities and ages. I have taught in a traditional dance studio and school environment for children and adults, in recreation therapy dance classes,  in outreach school programs and in one-on-one classes for beginner adults who are new to dance and wanted personalized instruction. I have created and led company classes as well as directed original shows for multiple companies.  I have choreographed for a cast of 150 and have done personalized movement plans for folks in that cast.

A little about the intensive: Dancers, choreographers and teachers with and without disabilities from the U.S. and abroad have been invited to attend AXIS’ annual Summer Intensive. The intensive is designed for attendees to learn new skills derived from the company’s working ethos and repertoire that will enhance and develop our own practice in improvisation, choreography and performance.  The week also includes a specialized teacher training for dance teachers and experienced artists wanting to enhance their skills and working methods in inclusive dance and translation for dancers with physical disabilities.

What your support will do for me and my community:  I am passionate about changing perceptions surrounding inclusive dance and creating performance and movement opportunities for people who have not always had a supportive, inclusive environment to work in.   Learning new tools for inclusive dance instruction and in translation choreography would be wildly helpful in the community that I work in with all of my dance, theatre and musical projects.

I am looking for a way to better my skills and learn how to create a truly inclusive environment for me and the artists around me. I know that I would benefit greatly from meeting and learning from the artists and teachers at AXIS and the other folks who attend the intensive. I want so badly to create the change I want to see in the organizations that I am already working with and be a part of a community that I am commited to and identify with.

I have a short window to make this happen, as the intensive starts on August 3rd, 2015 in Oakland, CA. I have some funding through AXIS and Magic Moments, but am looking for additional funding that would assist me with the money needed to travel to and from the intensive, lodging and miscellaneous costs such as local transportation and meals for the 10 days I will be with AXIS.

Thank you for your support!
