Help Professor Gladney's family

This Go Fund Me is set up to support the family of our beloved friend, colleague, and mentor Dru Gladney, who passed away suddenly at noon on Thursday, March 17. Dru was a leading expert on the peoples, politics, and cultures along the past and present Silk Road, as well as the Muslim societies in Central and East Asia. As a Fulbright scholar, he conducted field research in Western China, Central Asia, and Turkey over several decades. An internationally renowned academic, he was regularly featured on CNN, BBC, Voice of America, National Public Radio, and other news outlets. Many of his books have been translated into Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Arabic, Turkish, French, and German. Professor Dru Gladney held faculty positions at institutions across the country, arriving at Pomona College fifteen years ago, first as President of the Pacific Basin Institute and then as a Professor of Anthropology. He was a kind, approachable, accommodating, and thoughtful professor. An entire community is grieving the loss of this talented, creative, caring, and genuine person.

Dru Gladney's wife Jing is now facing a tremendous and unexpected loss. Jing is from China, cannot speak English well, and currently does not have a job. Your donation will offer her critical help with the initial costs of losing their husband, including helping to pay for the funeral home and bringing family to the memorial, and all other unanticipated expenses that arise both after a death and at the end of the calendar year. Dru Gladney was the sole contributor to his family's income; any and all contributions will take away some of the worry and stress that has suddenly become a part of her life.
