Carrie's Guatemala Medical Mission

Donation protected
Friends and Family,

I have been granted the extraordinary opportunity to travel to Guatemala this February with HELPS International, a medical mission organization. I was lucky enough to have been part of the HELPS team last year, and their work and efforts to provide sustainable healthcare to the impoverished people in the rural area of San Mateo, Guatemala has further grown my passion and eagerness to be a part of the third world healthcare movement.

HELPS has worked together with the Guatemalan government for over 30 years to help create prosperity and stability in developing countries through four main areas: healthcare, education, economic development, and sanitation. There are several groups who travel to different areas of Guatemala throughout the year - each providing different services. Our team, made up of about 100 volunteers (including my Mom and me!), provides medical and surgical relief, as well as preventative support in the community.

Last year, we transformed an abandonded school building into a hospital; triage, an outpatient clinic, a dental area, operating rooms, a PACU, and an inpatient ward for surgical patients who needed overnight monitoring. In less than two weeks, we saw and treated 954 patients in clinic, 62 dental cases, 131 surgical cases, and installed safe stoves and clean water in 60 homes. It goes without being said that the ripple effect of the HELPS initiative is massive.

Based solely on donations, we are able to treat and diagnose chronic health conditions, surgically repair hernias, cleft lips/palates, opthomology dysfunctions, and reproductive issues.

I believe that the only difference between myself and the ill, impoverished people of the developing world is that I was blessed to be born into a country where resources are plenty and education is accessible. As a nurse, my skill set is what I can offer, and with your help, support, and donations, I can contribute to the ongoing mission of helping those who cannot help themselves. Your past support has not only sent me on mission trips to West Africa, Nicaragua, and Guatemala, but it got me through nursing school and into a career I love. Your support has grown in me a love and respect for how we all provide for each other in unique and individual ways and have faith in the unseen.

As my mom and I prepare for our second trip to Guatemala, I consider myself lucky to be asking for donations, and am extremely grateful and humbled by each contribution.
